Perhaps one of the hottest rumours right now is Golden State's pursuit of Lauri Markkanen (though apparently a trade is becoming increasingly unlikely). This deal offers an alternative option for how the Warriors could acquire Markkanen (instead of giving up a bunch of young assets) and gives them some future flexibility.
The Rationale:
For the Warriors:
Though it may be strange to see both Draymond and Klay depart this offseason, and though Curry and Draymond are so good together the Warriors can keep their future (Pod and Kuminga) by moving him. Lauri is in a contract year, I think he has all-nba potential and given how good the Warriors can be I think this is a perfect situation for him. Offensively he can take a bit of the load off of Curry and considering the fact that he's only 27, he could really be key to the Warriors for a while if they manage to lock him up next offseason. Brandon Clarke too is an excellent rotation piece and is on a solid contract, perhaps more minutes on the Warriors will allow him to shine more.
The second great piece of this trade though is the cap flexibility the Warriors would have next offseason. Not only would they have nearly 60 million in cap space next offseason, they would also have a number of good role players and Curry under contract. They could legitimately add some more star talent and give Curry one last run at a ring next year.
For the Grizzles:
This is likely the toughest team to sell on this deal. However, the Grizzlies nearly brought in Draymond last year during FA and doing so now could still be great for the team. Draymond knows how to win, the Grizzlies defence would be disgusting, and this team is so deep it can afford to give up role players to make a deal like this. Plus the versatility that the Grizzlies would have lineup wise with Draymond would be awesome come playoff time.
The tough part is the picks, however considering how good the Grizzlies could be next year I don't think these firsts will be incredibly valuable to them in the long run. Plus adding 4 seconds with the track record that the Grizzlies have of developing talent is hopefully good enough compensation.
For the Jazz:
This is a haul back for Markkanen but it sounds like that's what it will take to move him. It sounds like most deals for him right now are just picks so adding four firsts plus some young players with some potential is great return. Wiggns value could also be somewhat be revamped with a change of scenery and the Jazz could move him later for more. This eats up the rest of the Jazz's cap space this offseason but I think the price is worth it for this rebuilding team.
