Clips push for contention, Raps get value back for expirings

  • Why Clippers would make this trade: They acquire Jimmy Butler and extend their contention window through the end of Kawhi's contract. The Clippers do not have control of their own picks until 2030, so they need to make moves to stay in contention.

  • Why Clippers may be hesitant: Losing DJJ and Powell along with a FRP may feel like giving up too much for an aging, disgruntled Jimmy. The Clippers may look to a different direction that does not involve them losing a first round pick and a legit scorer in Powell.

  • Why the Raptors would make this deal: The Raps acquire 2 useful rotation players (welcome back Norm) in exchange for expiring deals. Both Norm and DJJ are upgrades over Brown and Boucher at this point in time. Hopefully next season, they have their guys fully healthy to make a real playoff push and continue to develop whoever they draft in the summer.

  • Why the Raptors may be hesitant: The Raptors owe IQ, RJ, and Barnes a boatload of money in the summer and may not want to tack on their payroll if it means diving into the tax for a non-contender. Instead, they may look to acquire younger, cheaper players this deadline that better fit the timeline of their big 3.

  • Why the Heat make this deal: Expiring contracts and a juicy FRP in 2030 is great value for Jimmy at this point. I can't imagine they would turn down this sort of deal. Additionally, Bruce Brown is someone that can help them this season and someone they may want to resign in the summer.

  • Why the Heat don't make this deal: They are holding out for something better, which likely won't be available.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments. To me this makes a lot of sense for the Heat and Raptors, but I can see the Clips being hesitant to give up so much given Kawhi's injuries and Jimmy's age.
