For Portland, the upside is obvious. The Blazers turn Jrue Holiday, Jerami Grant, Matisse Thybulle, Robert Williams III and two future first-round picks and the 2029 swap into Anthony Davis and Trae Young without giving up Deni Avdija, Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, Donovan Clingan or Toumani Camara. That is a massive swing toward immediate contention.

Even if the deal fails, Portland is protected on the downside. Trae could leave, but that would clear nearly $49 million. Davis could ask out, but as a huge expiring or near-expiring star contract, he would still likely have trade value. Most importantly, Portland gets out of the long, expensive Holiday and Grant money. So this is not just a star trade; it is also a financial reset with upside.

For Washington, the logic is different. The Wizards are not trading prime, locked-in versions of Trae Young and Anthony Davis. Trae may not be committed long-term, and Davis is expensive, older, and carries injury risk. Instead of being forced into a massive Trae extension or holding Davis through a risky late-career contract, Washington converts both into draft capital and movable contracts.

The return is stronger than it may look at first. Two unprotected Portland firsts, especially 2027 and 2032, are real upside assets. A protected 2029 first adds another valuable piece. Thybulle, at a reasonable salary, remains one of the better defensive wings in the league. Robert Williams, if healthy and signed cheaply, is not dead money; he is a mobile defensive big who has started to show some shooting range. Holiday and Grant are expensive, but they become easier to move as their contracts get closer to expiration.

So Portland is buying a high-end contention window without sacrificing its core young players. Washington is selling two risky stars before their value potentially drops, while collecting multiple first-round assets and players who can still be flipped later.

That is why the trade is defensible for both sides: Portland gets the ceiling, Washington gets the reset package.
