Charlotte Finally Builds Some Depth

SUCCESS

This isn't a blockbuster trade, and that's kind of the point. The Hornets have spent years relying almost entirely on the development of LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, but this offseason is about building a more complete roster. Charlotte adds Noah Clowney through trade while also extending Coby White, signing Jalen Smith, and bringing in Ayo Dosunmu.

A potential lineup of LaMelo Ball, Coby White, Brandon Miller, Noah Clowney, and Mark Williams gives the Hornets more size, shooting, and versatility than they've had in recent seasons. White provides another scoring option and secondary ball-handler, Dosunmu adds defense and energy, Clowney fits the young timeline, and Smith strengthens the frontcourt rotation.

The biggest question is whether moving on from Tidjane Salaun is giving up on his potential too early. He's still very young and could develop into a valuable player down the road. But Charlotte's front office may decide that proven rotation pieces are more important than waiting several years for upside.

This move doesn't suddenly make the Hornets contenders, but it does make them deeper, more balanced, and more competitive. If LaMelo and Mark Williams can stay healthy, I think this roster has a legitimate chance to move beyond the Play-In and compete for a direct playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. 🏀
