Why the Thunder do it? This is a trade I’d like to see the Thunder make as a fan of the team. They get two still-very-young pieces who would presumably fit the team very well and are controlled on very good contracts for four seasons beyond this one. They would be selling low on Giddey but his actual trade value may actually be at its highest now (regardless of his legal issues) due to his upcoming restricted free agency, therefore, cashing in on now may be the smartest decision. Both Avdija and Stewart could easily be flipped at any point over the upcoming four seasons should they not fit in with the team well. Shamet would be brought in not only to help the team as a three-point shooter, but also as a potential trade facilitator due to his nice, non-guaranteed contract.
Why the Wizards do it? They would be receiving a very nice buy-low asset in Giddey here, who is still very young and has proven over the past three seasons that he has a lot of potential. Furthermore, they’d be be bringing a couple of second-draft guys in Mann and Pokusevski who would very likely be provided better opportunities to reach their potentials on a completely rebuilding Wizards team. Finally they’d be receiving a first-round pick in this year’s draft that has a relatively good chance of landing in the lottery.
Why the Pistons do it? They swap out a piece that may not be the best fit on their team for a very good scorer who plays the same position and is on a declining-salary contract while still being pretty young. He would presumably still be easy to flip if the team decides to pursue Siakam in free agency this summer and would be a nice consolation prize should they strike out on him, therefore, he makes a lot of sense for the Pistons to pursue.
