DETROIT PISTONS

Detroit uses its TPE by trading a 2029 first-round pick to the Grizzlies for Ty Jerome, an excellent combo guard making under $10 million the next two years who can serve as Detroit's future sixth man and occasional starter alongside Cade Cunningham as the Pistons pivot toward title contention. After a stellar rise that has seen the team emerge as the best team in the Eastern Conference and one of the NBA's three best teams by record, Detroit should now consider a move that quietly fortifies its position at the top of the Eastern Conference by taking advantage of the trade exception created when they moved Dennis Schröder to the Sacramento Kings in the summer of 2025. Acquiring Ty Jerome achieves this goal for the Pistons. Ty Jerome is currently having a career season in Memphis, averaging 20 points, 2 rebounds, and 5 assists per game while shooting over 48% from the field and just above 40% from three. These are stellar numbers for a combo guard in a Cunningham-centric offense, no matter what his role on the Pistons may be. Ty Jerome's skillset and production add two-way dynamism and offensive variety in Detroit alongside its superstar guard. Long-term, that would benefit the Pistons as they compete for championships and make deep playoff runs in the coming years. While their starting lineup remains unchanged from this trade, they add a stellar sixth man in Ty Jerome. Adding a sparkplug off the bench who fits perfectly with Cade Cunningham makes this trade undeniably worthwhile for Detroit.

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES

Even if the pick ends up late in the first round, Memphis continues its rebuild and cultural reset by moving Ty Jerome for a first-round pick in the 2029 NBA Draft. The Grizzlies are likely pivoting from their previous Nxt Gen era by undergoing a culture change, as evidenced by their recent decisions to trade Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. to Orlando and Utah, respectively. They have also explored trade packages for Ja Morant at the deadline and could continue testing the market for him this upcoming summer. That said, although this is Ty Jerome's first season in Memphis, the organization's recent decisions hint at a quiet pivot toward getting younger and changing their culture. Ty Jerome, who is already 28, may not fit the organization's new direction. The Grizzlies are prioritizing draft capital, as they control 11-13 first-round picks from 2026 to 2032. This trade with the Pistons adds another first-round pick to that war chest. Given the franchise is interested in pursuing a new direction and collecting as much draft capital in the process to execute this cultural reset, this package from Detroit, which adds a 2029 first-round pick, would be useful as they continue stockpiling draft capital. The 2026 NBA Draft would likely see the Grizzlies walk away with a pick in the top eight, which means building through the draft is their main organizational priority going forward. The Grizzlies could look to draft a forward to bolster their current forward core headlined by Jaylen Wells, GG Jackson, Santi Aldama, and Taylor Hendricks, or select a Ja Morant successor in the 2026 NBA Draft. Whichever decision they end up making, this trade with the Pistons supports their new direction. Trading Ty Jerome would also open additional minutes for many of the Grizzlies' young guards, such as Walter Clayton Jr., Scotty Pippen Jr., and Cam Spencer. All three of these guards need developmental minutes to grow and align with Zach Kleiman's new vision in Memphis. Regardless of what their starting lineup looks like entering the 2026-27 NBA season, this trade leaves the Grizzlies in a stronger rebuilding position, moving forward with Cedric Coward and Zach Edey as long-term pieces.

This trade takes place during the summer of 2026. Detroit competes. Memphis rebuilds. Both teams profit in their respective directions.
