Why the Bucks make this trade: The Bucks get an upgrade at the SF position and make a final push for an NBA championship. Losing Portis will hurt their depth, but his outgoing salary is needed to get MIL under the first apron to allow for the trade. It is not a perfect trade/fit for Milwaukee and the trade does pose some risk with a lose of a future draft pick, but this is the kind of swing and high end talent they need if they're going to get to the finals.
Why the Heat make this trade: The Jimmy Butler trade market is looking pretty weak for Miami so far as the new CBA along with Jimmy's potentially expiring contract makes it difficult to find suitors. However, this trade lowers Miami's tax bill this year, gives them some rotational pieces they can use this year along with a valuable future draft pick, and offers them more flexibility in the coming offseason with Portis likely opting out of his deal.
Why the Pistons make this trade: With the lost of Jaden Ivey, the Pistons are in need of additional shooting and on-ball creation. Middleton slides in perfectly to fill this role and also provides some spot up shooting next to Cade. There are definitely concerns with Middleton's age, but after taking a few games to ramp up, Khris has played very well for the Bucks. If the Pistons want to make a serious push for the playoffs, this trade keeps them in the race.
