Heat acquire Trae Young

The Rationale

For the Heat:

This team has the talent to continue to be competitive for the next few years, but without a second offensive star they don't have the ability to truly compete for a title; enter Trae Young (on a discount). Not only was he good enough to lead a team to the ECF a few years ago, playing alongside other stars like Jimmy and Bam would take some of the expected load off his back. Miami's defence (and coaching) can be enough to cover for his defensive inability, and his ability to be an offensive juggernaut would be huge for this team as Jimmy continues to age. Trae's scoring and assists could really help the Heat whose offensive rating was 21st in the league last year and who were 26th in team ppg. Simply put, Herro and Rozier are good players but Miami needs another star to compete, something these two guys can't be.

Paul Reed and Marcus Sasser are good pieces to add as well for the sake of depth, and Spo seems to be able to get value out of anybody (maybe he can even get Trae to play some defence). Plus the Heat get to keep their young pieces in Jaquez, Jovic, and Ware which is a plus. Giving up those future picks hurts, however Miami is always an FA destination and with the strength of their front office I think they'll always be able to find a way to be competitive.

For the Hawks:

It seems like the Hawks are currently stuck between tanking and competing with no clear direction. Without Trae, I doubt this team could really do much and with Trae they seem to be either a few years off from competing or would have to really put their future on the line to add another star and be competitive. I don't think the Hawks move Trae though without the guarantee that they'd get their picks from SA back. This trade gets them full control of their picks, plus the expiring contract of Hardaway and a trade chip in Rozier; in other words a great move to restart and rebuild. They can move off Rozier later in the season to get some more rebuilding pieces and though it sucks to give up Trae for perhaps less than he is actually worth I think this is the right move.

For the Pistons:

The Pistons need to add more pieces around Cade, specifically to help him offensively. Though he was the expected complimentary piece, I don't think Ivey becomes anything at this point (his advanced numbers were terrible last year), and any piece they add should be able to shoot at the very least. Herro is a good shooter, and can compliment Cade as a secondary ball handler plus he is under contract for the next few years. Herro also brings some playoff experience to this team, and being out of the spotlight in Miami might be good for him to continue to develop his game in a new setting. I know there is some love for Sasser in Detroit but Herro is an upgrade and a better compliment to Cade. I don't think Paul Reed or Hardaway are really valuable pieces to Detroit so breaking with them doesn't really hurt.

For the Spurs:

I think this perhaps the hardest team to sell on this deal. These Hawks picks could be quite valuable and so parting with them requires a decent amount of compensation. However, I don't think that these picks will be incredibly valuable as long as the Hawks holds on to Trae. And I don't think the Hawks will trade Trae unless they get all their picks back.

For the two Hawks pick and the one swap, the Spurs get a Pistons 1st and two lightly protected Miami 1sts that could end up being quite valuable depending on the ultimate outcome of this experiment with Trae Young. Plus the Toronto second this year will be quite high (effectively a late first imo) and three additional future seconds can help sweeten the deal for a team who would now have control of 40 picks over the next 7 years.

So in summary, that is 2 1sts and a swap for 3 1sts and 4 seconds.
