re-tooling in the west

SUCCESS

fyi could be totally overvaluing Tim here, but a near 20 ppg, leading 6th man of the year candidate has got to have some value.

MAVS: Trade is centred around the Mav's Tim Hardaway Jr. pretty easily the best player in the deal despite him disappearing every 2nd game. losing Tim is significant for the Mavs as he is their only "consistent" scorer outside of Luka and Kyrie and not replacing that in a deal could be dire.

acquiring Santi Aldama significantly helps the Mavs in their most desperate areas (starting calibre 4, and wing/big defence) Santi is decent to a good defender, but an upgrade on pretty much every Mavs wing. Also gives you something you don't have in someone who can work in the post, and rack up points as someone outside Luka/Kai/Tim. Santi also fits into jason kidds obsession with building this team for small ball with him playing a lot smaller than 6'11 and being a very capable floor spacer, making him also able to play alongside a big such as Lively or Powell and in this Sharpe in bigger lineups. Downsides: he is not the scorer that Tim is and probably isn't ready to be given such a responsibility. He and Grant Williams on the same team is asking for trouble with altercations, putting even more pressure on Luka and his tech count. As mentioned before plays smaller than his size and shouldn't really be seen as a big more as a smaller 4. Shouldn't be seen as a pick-and-roll option considering who else the Mavs have, but the pick-and-pop could be interesting and with Luka's one-of-a-kind level playmaking I wouldn't put it past him making it work. Mavs will have to pay him soon and with them being so close to the apron that could be a testing negotiation, they do free up money in this deal though with this in mind.

Dinwiddie returns to the Mavs, following two very mixed seasons, Mavs will be hoping this is a repeat of the Spencer they got on the run to the conference finals. This is a very cheap and low-risk move for basically 2 second-round picks, with a genuine season-changing upside. Spencer seems to like Dallas and the organisation, but with him being a volatile player who knows what his feelings are after being traded, and how he'll gel with a new star guard in Kyrie who wasn't there prior. Even with a continually poor-performing Dinwiddie, his contract is expiring and they can rid themselves of a potential cancer. on the other side, the Mavs gain a 3rd ball handler capable of running an offence and supporting Dallas' stars in the case of one of them missing a game and just in general and providing an extra scoring punch in the absence of Tim Hardaway jr.

Sharpe gives the Mavs another attempt at a big man, this one being particularly younger and can be given time to develop behind Dwight and Lively. unsure of how highly the Nets value him so this could be a bit of a stretch, but they also don't have many toss-away contracts so they don't take on as much money.

Markieff is a non-guaranteed deal so they can waive him without any cap impact to make room for the extra incoming player I'm pretty sure.

GRIZZLIES: I know it may be hard to part with a current starter and solid piece of the rotation in Santi Aldama, but hear me out. We know Ja is rather injury-prone, may he be better after the extended time off who knows? if he were to miss time again do you really want to rely on this team to carry you through that period, this season I think proves that their playoff season where they were actually better with Ja not playing was a fluke or at least extremely dependent on the consistency on Tyus Jones who is now gone. Adding Hardaway gives you another scoring punch that has never been there with this team. Tim can cover the shooting of Kennard who you will be losing in this deal and even more additional scoring on top of that as he is genuinely one of the best volume scorers in the league. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking he's even a slightly good defender, cause he's not, but pair him with guys like Marcus Smart and Desmond Bane he'll be way easier to hide on the defensive side of the ball where he is quite often exposed on a weak defensive team in the mavericks. quick shoutout to Xavier Tillman, been a solid guy for them for a while now, but with the bigs they have he is expendable with his contract running out.

NETS: bit of a tougher sell here as no one knows wtf the nets are doing. If anything Day'ron Sharpe probably has some good value to them backing up Claxton, but that really can't be your big-man lineup if you're looking to be a serious team.

Dinwiddie is really toxic there and with everything coming out about him and the team you've just gotta get rid, you're a struggling team with absolutely no identity the last thing you need is player drama on top of that. Sending him back to Dallas is one of the only real moves I see for him, he's on a decent-sized contract that is expiring tbf but he is a player you're going to ask to contribute and with reports of intentionally throwing games, I can't see many people other than the Mavs wanting to touch that.

Kennard is the needle mover here, we've seen what he's like when he's on, it's just figuring out how to get that consistently. There will be a team that is willing to give up assets for a player of his quality you could re-route him to or flip him in the off-season/next year's deadline. Maybe you even want to keep him if you think he fits your timeline.

Holmes is a negative for sure, but something has to pay for that Dinwiddie contract and adding two admittedly not-great seconds makes it a little bit less of a hard pill to swallow, and with them being 2025 and 2028 you have some time to flip those if you're looking for that. Holmes contract will look quite a bit better next year being an expiring and could probably be used as an asset in some moves for some much more long-term assets.

Tillman gives you a guaranteed backup big man who you can re-sign and make a decision on his future with the team, but overall a very friendly pickup.

you don't like taking on this much money and I will admit I don't know what the Net's cap space and apron situation is like so that could immediately rule this move out because it's certainly not worth a tax or anything hampering your team going forward.
