They are somehow more efficient without Tatum, so it makes sense to go for it now. Gafford is the rim protecting big. It Costs them a shooter and a pick.
Dallas is tanking. Or they should be. theyve got to get rid of Davis & Kyrie's contracts. Both are good when they play but hurt a team like the Grizzlies who are also moving on from Ja could use a partner who has good players. Grizzlies are a few games out from the 8th & play in. Adding Davis next to JJJ would close off the rim while it affords Davis interior scoring with the spacing JJJ gives. They are already playing with this roster. When Kyrie returns it should charge them into a playoff seed around the all star break. Its a low risk move for the Grizzlies because this avoids a tank title while tanking in the worst case scenario where both Davis & Kyrie remain riddled with injuries. Aldama is a good bench big to pair with Davis as well given his youth. Both contracts run 3 years as does Ja's. KCP and Clark are expirings in a year. For Dallas those contracts are essentially one year deals while Ja potentially pairs with your young star Flagg making a tank job in everyone's best interest to add a devastating scoring G to your arsenal.
