The Pacers find their center of the future with more of a defensive calling card than what they’re used to. Kessler comes with a lot of pros - he’s a very efficient finisher at the rim, is statistically one of the best shot blockers in the league, great rebounder, plays well in transition, and can hold his own on the perimeter. All at only 24 years old.
Losing Turner’s scoring ability and three-point shooting is a setback, but Kessler’s efficient finishing, lob catching, and low-usage game opens up more touches and playmaking opportunities for Nembhard, Nesmith, and Siakam. Adding Sensabaugh here gives the Pacers a young scorer to fill out some rotations with Haliburton, and now Mathurin, not playing with the team.
The Jazz cash in on a talented high-usage wing while quietly building a roster to compliment him. This would theoretically be the year Mathurin is given a heavy scoring load and asked to win them games. Probably one of the most important contract years existing in the league right now.
Mathurin has legit talent as a scorer and can crack 20 ppg with his driving ability, shot creation, and ability to draw defenders. For a Jazz team looking for a release valve, he might be the player that moves them from their current play to an up-and-coming team like the Blazers. Their developing core has some intriguing pieces that could grow alongside a high-usage 3-level scorer like Mathurin—especially Ace Bailey.
This could be a Jalen Green-Jabari Smith Jr. relationship where you force Bailey to support Mathurin on offense allowing him to work on off-ball play early and raise his floor as a contributor to wins. Having Markkanen on the team should also help Mathurin’s development playing with another high-usage player and being forced to pass and defend better alongside him. If you looking to move Kessler, Mathurin should be a good long-term gamble for a team who can make multiple swings at the bat with their current timeline.
Lmk if the value is off for any team. I’m not tapped into the Jazz or Pacers fandoms
