Why the Wizards do it? They’re basically trading away four lesser-used rotation players for four younger players (three former first-round picks) who could all be treated as second-draft guys. It’s a better alternative than trading these players a for a small collection of second-round picks in separate deals.
Why the Clippers do it? They shave their tax bill by a few million this year, and by an even larger amount for next season, while upgrading their roster by acquiring a very solid defensive guard and a decent floor spacer.
Why the Thunder do it? They bring in three veteran pieces that could potentially help the team both on and off the floor throughout what they hope to be a deep playoff run. Furthermore, Tucker’s guaranteed contract for next season and Shamet’s non-guaranteed contract for next season would provide them with two mid-sized contract to potentially include in a larger trade this offseason, similar to the role that Bertan’s contract is currently playing for them. Bringing in two second-round picks for their troubles of taking on Tucker’s contract would be an added bonus.
