NBA Three-Team Trade: LeBron Returns Home

FAILED

Three-Team Trade Proposal In this trade, the Los Angeles Lakers receive Jarrett Allen. The Cleveland Cavaliers receive LeBron James in a sign-and-trade, Dillon Brooks, and the 25th overall pick. The Phoenix Suns receive a future first-round pick, the 29th overall pick, Dalton Knecht, Max Strus, and Jalen Tyson. In addition, the Cavaliers re-sign James Harden to a three-year, $77 million contract. From the Lakers' perspective, this trade only makes sense if they are unable to acquire players such as Walker Kessler or Jalen Duren. If those options are not available, Jarrett Allen becomes a very attractive target. He is one of the league’s best defensive centers, provides elite rebounding, and would fit well next to Luka Dončić. While losing LeBron James would be difficult, Allen could help the Lakers build a younger and more balanced roster. For the Cavaliers, this trade is all about maximizing their championship window. Dillon Brooks brings something the team has lacked: a true “dog” mentality, defensive intensity, toughness, and energy. The return of LeBron James would also be a romantic story, bringing the franchise legend back to Cleveland for another title run. Trading away Jarrett Allen is not necessarily about his talent, but more about roster fit. This move would allow Evan Mobley to finally play full-time at center, while LeBron would fill the forward spot next to him. Combined with James Harden, the Cavaliers would have one of the most experienced and talented veteran cores in the NBA. The Suns are the most difficult team to evaluate in this deal. On one hand, the package gives them young talent, depth, and additional draft assets. On the other hand, it may not be enough value depending on how they view the players involved. Phoenix may also be reluctant to commit around $30 million per year to Dillon Brooks if an extension is required in the future. However, if we are being honest, the Suns could really benefit from collecting more first-round picks and improving their long-term flexibility. For that reason, the additional draft capital may be the most attractive part of the trade for them. Overall, the trade gives the Lakers a defensive anchor, allows the Cavaliers to go all-in on a championship run with the return of LeBron James, and gives the Suns future assets that could help reshape the franchise in the coming years.
