Hello everyone! Back again with another deal here. I know it gets a little boring seeing me make Knicks trades, especially when the Knicks don't have much to work with, but here are my realistic deadline moves for the Knicks, Pelicans, and Rockets.
Starting with the Knicks, there have been many rumours circulating about whether or not the Knicks will look to move off of Mitchell Robinson. At this point in the season with him nearing a return as all accounts indicate, I don't see the value in moving Mitch when his value is at an all-time low. When healthy, Robinson is a beast. One of the best interior defenders and rebounders in the league. He has also seemingly trimmed down a bit in his conditioning signalling he may return to his more athletic style of play we once saw in his early days. The question remains whether he can stay healthy, but my best guess is that since the Knicks haven't made a deal with him yet, they believe he will return and stay healthy. In that case, the center spot depth is extremely solid, but it doesn't leave many options to make other improvements due to salary matching. What I believe is the missing piece for this bench is a wing that can take the load off of Mikal, OG, and Hart on both ends of the floor. Although Shamet has been showing signs of filling that spot, I believe Green is the perfect player to fill out this roster. He brings exactly the kind of energy that Thibs loves, a defensive menace who rebounds well and can shoot the 3. To me, he is a Hart-Lite. To get him in this trade, the Knicks give up Sims and a weak second-rounder. It is a low-risk investment that could pay off in major ways. If it requires a better 2nd, I am all in. There are already rumours of this deal in the works, with most showing a straight swap, however, I believe Green is slightly more valuable than Sims alone.
For the Pelicans, this season has unfortunately been a wash. It is rather unfortunate as looking at this roster before the season, I had high hopes they could be a top-6 team in the West even without Missi having such a great year. But as it currently stands they are shopping just about everyone on their roster, and I would not be surprised if they make some big readjustments. That being said, barring any other moves such as BI getting shipped off while they still can, they need to clear some salary to avoid the luxury tax. For a small market team, especially one that has never paid the luxury tax in its existence, this is a solid move to get them back under the tax and potentially allow them to offer the money to BI that he would like due to the extra money they would receive. To do it, they swap Green for Sims who can play backup center plus a second, then move Theis for a second. To get to the minimum amount of players they would most likely convert Brandon Boston JR to a minimum deal, and bring up another two-way guy. As they most likely would not retain Green or Theis this offseason, this is a good way to get some small assets out of them now while ducking the luxury. There has also been interest from the Pelicans on Sims to be a long-term option as an explosive defensive-minded center. Obviously in this scenario, the Pelicans are setting the price so if they want a better second from the Knicks they can have it.
Lastly for the Rockets, they have been rumoured as a team in the market for some center depth, with early reports they were interested in Sims. However, I think a reunion of Theis under Udoka is the perfect move. He fits much more into their scheme than other options available, and at the cost of a second-rounder, it is a no-brainer cheap option. Reports have said he is worth around a second-rounder, though in light of Bryant only being moved for a second-round swap, I wouldn't be surprised if the Rockets offered a lesser-value second than this. Not much more to say on this one.
So what do you think? Does this trade make sense for these teams? What would you change? Who says no? Who wins? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below and as always, please keep it constructive and civil. Thank you very much! :)
