i know this is incredibly unlikely, but there is a lot of things that makes sense within this trade, stay tuned
Wizards - it sounds crazy to take on the leagues worst contract while potentially somewhat spoiling the tank, but there are some aspects here that make sense. #1: the Wizards are unlikely to get good value for Kuzma or Brogdon, so mind as well take on bad money for a super intriguing fully unprotected 2031 Suns first round pick. #2: obviously Beal is a franchise staple in Washington, he could come back to mentor the young guys, while potentially even staying long term in a reduced role into the new era once the young guys are ready to lead the team. #3: this trade clears a roster spot to promote Jared Butler to a standard contract, and assuming they’d just buy out Richardson, can also promote Justin Champaigne to a standard contract as well. yes there are easier ways for Washington to do that, but it’s still a positive. if Washington still isn’t intrigued enough, they could ask Phoenix to potentially dump Tyus Jones to another team for extra draft picks, which would then go to Washington.
Heat - it’s clear the Jimmy saga needs to come to a close. this trade package isn’t overwhelming, but there are some positives. both Kuzma and Bey (who’s likely out for the year) fit the updated team timeline around Bam/Herro/etc very well, while also being on very solid long term contracts. Brogdon on the other hand can immediately start in the backcourt next to Herro and is also an expiring contract that would help clear cap for Miami this summer. Kuzma and Brogdon are both good win now role players, which is key for Miami since they NEED to make the playoffs this year. if they don’t make the playoffs this year, they’ll owe unprotected 1st round picks to the Thunder in 2026 and Hornets in 2028, rather than a lottery protected pick in 2027 to Charlotte. not the sexiest haul, but definitely worthwhile.
Suns - this one’s obvious. get your guy in Jimmy, while also getting off of the Beal albatross. may need to flip Tyus and/or Grayson Allen for draft picks to further entice Washington, and this would still be a good trade for them. next steps would probably be to ride out the season, hope you hit on your 2025 2nd round pick via Denver just as well as you did with Ighodaro, and then flip Nurkic’s expiring contract for an upgrade (that’s probably on a long term bad money deal). the team looks much better with Jimmy instead of Beal. note: Burks is being brought in via the minimum exception, Phoenix isn’t going past the 2nd apron rules. Burks is getting old, but maybe he can contribute for them off the bench.
