Why the Lakers do this:

The Lakers are desperate for a good 3rd option to help out LeBron and AD on offense. That’s why they trade for Grant and get a good depth player in Banton. Although it costs them Hachimura, this would be their best chance at winning another ring.

They’re rebuilding and this is probably the best package they can get back for Grant with his contract. Portland would be happy to get future picks for him.
