Why Lakers do it?
They absolutely need defense in the starting line, and Jrue provides very good guard defense while being good offensively as well. The Lakers have a small window currently to win a championship while LeBron can be Luka's second star and dont have many tradeable assets to make up for a big upgrade. Jrue's age is not much of a concern for the Lakers since it fits their championship window, and actually helps them have enough to obtain him, otherwise his value would be a lot higher.

Why Portland does it?
Besides the obvious answer of getting a first round pick for a 35 year old jrue holiday, another bonus that is specific to this trade is that the Blazers can now clear 40+ million instead of 20+ million, resulting in the Blazers having a max-contract space for the 2026 free agency.
