Proposed Trade:
Spurs get: Deni Avdija
Blazers get: #2 pick (Dylan Harper)
Let’s assume this happens on draft night — the Spurs select Harper and then trade him for Avdija.
Why the Spurs might do it:
With Stephon Castle, De'Aaron Fox and CP3, the Spurs’ backcourt is getting crowded. What they’re missing is a versatile, defensive-minded forward who doesn’t need the ball to contribute — Deni Avdija fits that mold perfectly. He brings:
Point-forward skills to complement Wemby
Defensive versatility (can guard 2–4, switchable)
Strong motor and high IQ, no ego If the Spurs are looking to speed up their timeline, Deni is a great fit. They’d be giving up the upside of Dylan Harper, but getting a known, ascending NBA player who fits exactly what they lack.
Why the Blazers might do it: This is a bet on star upside. Deni Avdija was terrific after the trade to Portland, but Harper might have a higher ceiling as a true on-ball creator — potentially the top offensive engine in the draft. By adding Harper:
You potentially find your “alpha” scorer. Pair him with Sharpe (athletic scoring wing), Clingan (elite rim protector), and Camara (defensive glue guy).
You keep flexibility to trade Simons, Ayton, and R. Williams to and Scoot Henderson, further build around that young core.
The Blazers might feel Deni is a better second or third option, and if Harper projects as a #1, this is the time to make a bold move.
Who says no?
Spurs fans: Would you give up on Harper’s potential for the safer but less starry Deni? Blazers fans: Are you ready to flip a proven, ascending piece like Deni for the chance at a true #1 option? Is this a rare win-win based on team timelines and needs?
