++Overview:++
In this trade Portland begins the 'process' (a rebuild), the Nets try and contend for a short window with Claxton, Dame, Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson; and finally, the Rockets take a high-risk, high-reward approach with the acquisition of Ben Simmons.
++Brooklyn:++
In this mock trade, Brooklyn will attempt to contend for a short window. Where their roster is at the moment is that they have good players between the ages of roughly 23-28. While their pieces are decent individually and Mikal Bridges is a great player, they are lacking that star power that they lost when they traded Kyrie and KD. When you look at their starting 5, they have plenty of defensive playmakers (bar Mikal Bridges). While this is a good spine to have for your team, scoring will be a problem. At the moment, Mikal is the only volume scorer on the team. They also don't have any shooters. Ben Simmons would be expendable for them for obvious reasons including cap space, injuries and the fact that with his form at the moment that he is very replaceable. The first-round picks that they would give up would be a 2025 and a 2030 pick. The reason I chose these picks is because 2025 would be towards the end of that small period of contending and the 2030 pick is because they would hopefully have rebuilt by then. The reason why I think Brooklyn should rebuild between 2026 and 2029 is because they have their own pick for most of those years and they have first-round picks tied to currently old teams such as Phoenix and Philadelphia. This is a win-win situation for both Dame and the Nets.
++Portland:++
This explanation is probably clearer than the other two. They drafted Scoot Henderson at Pick 3 in the 2023 draft. He looks about untouchable from the roster at the moment. He plays the same position as Dame. He is 19 years old. Damian Lillard stated before the draft that he would like to play with a team that had a chance at contending as he would not be around much longer before he retires. This Portland team looks well underway in a rebuild and if they sell Dame now, they might have a larger chance of contending sooner rather than later. The plus side is that they get a young former first-round pick in Tari Eason along with three first-round picks which happen to be in the perfect window for Portland to trade for a good player when they focus on contending again. Again, a win-win situation.
++Houston:++
This trade is a high-risk ploy for the Rockets, however, could yield very high rewards. Simmons looks content at the moment in Brooklyn however it wouldn't exactly be hard to pry him out, given the Nets are shopping him around. This move could benefit Simmons immensely as he would come under the tutelage of Ime Udoka the former Celtics head coach. If he manages to get his injuries behind him, he could become a good player again. More importantly, a good mentor. Simmons is such a versatile player who can play positionless basketball and has invaluable playoff experience which this Rockets side so dearly desires. I'm confident he could be a great mentor for Amen Thompson and Jalen Green. Maybe some youth around him plus low expectations could be what Simmons needs to return to all-star form. This would come at a price though. I decided to sell Tari Eason and a 2025 first-round pick for a couple of reasons. Eason is an SF/PF by nature in which Houston already has plenty of young talent such as Jabari Smith Jr, Kevin Porter Jr and more recently: Cam Whitmore. The first-round pick would fall during years where they would be contending so it wouldn't matter as much. They would have to take on plenty of cap and maybe avoid signing Harden, however this could be the better long term play.
