In order to completely understand the moves a team makes the timeline of events must be listed as well.

Pre Draft

  • Waive Landry Shamet's non guaranteed contract saving 11 million

Draft

  • Pick 2 the Wizards select Rob Dillingham

  • Pick 26 the Wizards select Terrence Shannon Jr.

  • Wizards trade Corey Kispert and pick 51 to the Magic in a 3 team deal that lands them pick 44 and 3 future SRPs

  • Pick 44 the Wizards select PJ Hall

    • Explanation: The Wizzards take the guy they view to have the most potential in Dillingham. They then take a wing who they think could pair with Coulilbaly. This selection frees up Kispert to be moved which brings back a good amount of draft capital.

Free Agency

  • The Wizards primary focus is retaining flexibility so they target Markell Fultz giving him a 3 year deal worth 45 million dollars. However, this deal includes a team option in year 2 and a non guaranteed year 3.

  • They then sign Reggie Bullock to a 2 year 10 million dollar deal with the 2nd year being a team option using a part of the room MLE.

  • After these signings the Wizards trade Deni Avdija to the Thunder in exchange for Josh Giddey and the better of the Thunder/Clippers/Nuggets (top 5 protected) 2027 FRP.

  • The team declines Johnny Davis' final year.

Start of Season

Starting lineup:

  • Rob Dillingham

  • Terrence Shannon Jr

  • Bilal Coulibaly

  • Kyle Kuzma

  • Marvin Bagley

The bench has the experience as they go into this season planning for a year of growth. Giddey, Fultz, and Poole bring 3 ball handlers into the mix all of whom play completely different styles. Patrick Baldwin finally gets some consistent minutes and Tristan Vukcevic plays backup big man minutes.

During the season

The goal is very clearly to tank but after about 30 games the team starts to realize it could negatively impact Dillingham and Coulibaly not having a legit team out there. They take Shannon Jr out of the starting lineup for Fultz and allow Kuzma to seek a trade. This leads to the Wizards having the worst record in the league and up to 90 million coming off the books in the offseason.
