I saw MDDAWG’s trade that sent Ingram to Memphis (https://fanspo.com/nba/s/general/trades/0V1sWUqImCw88r/buckspelicansraptorsgrizzlies) and wondered if I could cobble together enough assets financially to keep Marcus Smart with the Grizzlies. This trade is the result of that thought experiment. Thanks MDDAWG for the inspiration.

Changes from original: On the original, I forgot to account for the positive value of LaRavia and Aldama, and only considered their salaries. These two are valuable young assets and in this updated deal the Grizzlies get some second rounders back for them and similar amounts of salary still end up in New Orleans. Additionally, it has been brought to my attention that Mamadi Diakite was waived, so he is not included in this updated deal.
Why the Grizzlies do this:
The Grizzlies don’t really have a star forward scorer and this deal gives them that without losing their main core assets. Ingram can pick up some serious scoring load and help the team throughout the season and maybe even help keep Ja healthier due to less wear and tear.
Why the Pelicans do this:
This is easily the best return the Pelicans will get for Ingram: Clarke can be a short-term 5 option there and they get plenty of picks and young guys for someone in Ingram who has received little trade interest so far. These assets are also extremely tradeable and could end up with a third team in exchange for another C if they don’t like Clarke.
Why the Bulls do this:
LaRavia is a forward with solid potential that the Bulls could attempt to utilize going forward. They get rid of low-value players in exchange for him and save some money as well.
Why the Hornets do this:
The Hornets acquire Aldama with the hopes that he can develop into a solid long-term backup PF for them. They also acquire vet leader Derrick Rose who could help LaMelo expand his skill set and they also save a few dollars as those two salaries combined are less than Micic who they give up.
Thoughts on this trade? I’m looking forward to discussing it with you all in the comments!
