The Memphis Grizzlies also acquire a 2032 Lakers first round swap
The Rationale for each of the teams,
Memphis Grizzlies: Given the current state of the West, perhaps it is best if the Memphis Grizzlies decide to blow it up, pull off an OKC style rebuild where they stock pile massive amounts of draft picks, and wait a few years till they have a better chance in the West to be competitive. If this is the direction they head in, this trade (based off the Bane deal) would help them do just that.
The Grizzlies in this trade move off of their top 3 players in Bane (already traded), JJJ, and Morant to get Cole Anthony, Dalton Knecht, expiring contracts, 3 firsts in this year's draft, plus 10 future firsts and 4 future swaps. The Grizzlies would also have roughly 27 million + the salaries of this year's draft picks in committed salary next offseason— perfectly positioning them to take on more bad contracts for more assets. This deal could see them bottom out for the next few seasons before really becoming competitive in a few years time, just like OKC did.
Magic: They already made this deal so...
Raptors: This team needs a defensive anchor and JJJ could be just their guy. Obviously they are paying less than what he is probably worth, but given the fact that he is entering the last year of his deal and that they are taking on the bad contract of KCP the Raptors get him for cheaper. JJJ fits the Raptors general timeline, and the team does not have the break the bank to trade for him. Furthermore, in trading away Barrett and Poeltl, the Raptors also have some cap flexibility to offer JJJ the max next offseason.
Lakers: This trade solves the centre issue for the team, plus gets them a guy in Barrett (who they have been rumoured to be interested in) to provide more offence on the wing. Because they don't have a ton of assets they do have to give up swaps in 28, 30, and 32, plus a 31 unprotected first, but with Luke on the team I don't think they mind. Additionally, the players they are trading away are expiring deals and Dalton Knecht who they already tried to trade anyways.
Nets: The Nets get their star PG moving into the future, plus retain control of their own picks moving forwards. Additionally, they have 4 more firsts and additional cap space to still fill out this roster around Morant.
