Why the Grizzlies do it: This team has way too many big men and no shooting. A team constructed like this cannot succeed in the modern NBA. Especially after the loss of Luke Kennard in free agency, there are no reliable shooting options left outside of KCP. Also, Brandon Clarke makes an insane amount of money for such a limited role on the roster, so he is the perfect candidate for a trade. This trades gets rid of an expensive and redundant player, while adding shooting and more forward depth.
Why the Celtics do it: Hauser's expensive long-term contract doesn't fit the Celtics' current timeline. He takes up to much of the cap space needed to rebuild the team after the Jayson Tatum injury. While Clarke is a more expensive contract, it ends two years before Hauser's does. Also, the lack of solid PF/C players on the Celtics will be helped greatly with this move.
