Why Memphis Does It:
I think it's clear that for the Grizzlies one of their top priorities this offseason, is to get a big after trading Steven Adams to the Rockets during the season. In this trade they get a fantastic defensive big in Williams lll, who'll provide good backup 5 minutes behind JJJ. Even though they lose their 9th pick, moving back 5 spots to 14 in this draft to save a little money wouldn't be the end of the world. There would still be players like Devin Carter, Jared McCain, Isaiah Collier, etc. available. This trade makes even more sense, if Clingan is gone before then
10-Man Rotation:
Morant/Smart/Bane/Clarke/JJJ
Carter/Williams Jr/Konchar/GG/Williams lll
Why Portland Does It:
The Blazers are still in their rebuild, and the only way that they'll be able to accelerate it is if they find a star in the draft. Having two top-ten picks at 7 & 9, would give the organization two bites at the apple to find that player. Maybe this can ensure them taking Tidjane Salaun at 7 before the Spurs do, while also getting another high level prospect at 9. There's also Kennard who's included in this trade, who'll come in provide much needed floor spacing to a roster that is in dire need of perimeter shooting.
10-Man Rotation:
Scoot/Simons/Grant/Camara/Ayton
Brogdon/Sharpe/Kennard/Salaun/Reath
