About the only type of Jaylen Brown-Houston trade scenario that I could get behind

SUCCESS

Thunder: Obviously a couple of assumptions are being made here. 1) They want salary relief ahead of Holmgren's extension that'll bump his salary up by $30M or so, not to mention whatever ungodly number SGA will be eligible for soon. 2) They don't want to supermax Jalen Williams on top of both of those other looming salary commitments, and decide to trade him. In this scenario they get: FVV's $44M expiring for the cap relief; Jabari Smith Jr., who doesn't have star aspirations but is already a very good support player and will continue to be that for a long time, and won't command obscene money on his extension; Cam Whitmore (optional), a big SF who will compete with Dillon Jones to fill the Dort void and would be buried in Houston after this trade anyway; two Phoenix picks plus a Phoenix swap and the 2027 Brooklyn swap (plus maybe more). They'll be looking to make more moves after this, with four first round draft picks plus actually increasing this season's cap number by $10M on this deal. With J-Dub, Dort, and Isaiah Joe outgoing after 68 wins and a (probable) championship, it's a jarring change to the roster, but financial moves are never popular.

Rockets: They get the best player in the deal in Jaylen Brown, plus Isaiah Joe and Jaylin Williams as salary throw-ins (Dieng could also work in J-Will's place if OKC wants to ditch more cap right now; I don't know how they value him). They keep all of their desirable players/prospects aside from Jabari, and instead pay up with draft capital, all of which will get directed to the Thunder in light of how well the Celtics are making out here both on the floor and on the books. They'll need a point guard barring a major turnaround by Reed Sheppard, but they have enough roster glut that they'll want to make another trade anyway.

Celtics: Jaylen Brown trade noise is increasing, especially with Houston. If I want to stay competitive while cutting costs in 25-26 and get back to winning in 26-27, there isn't much on Houston's roster that interests me besides Thompson and Sengun, both likely untouchable. Jaylen Brown is an elite player. Jabari can't fill that void, Jalen Green is dime-a-dozen, Reed Sheppard had an atrocious first season, Cam Whitmore isn't that kind of guy. Being the beneficiaries of some long-term-oriented salary shedding by OKC, with Jalen Williams (top-3 guy on a 68 win team and probable champion) as the grand prize, is much much more appealing. Dort is icing and probably on his way out anyway for financial reasons, with cheaper planned replacements (Dillon Jones and now Whitmore) already on the roster. With this kind of return, I do not care about getting draft picks as long as my own future stash isn't touched; those can all go to OKC. The Celtics come out looking good on the court AND escape the second apron, with Hauser's $10M able to dumped for extra relief and the pressure on Jrue eased considerably. In a weird twist, it suddenly becomes crucial to ++KEEP++ Porzingis in this scenario, since the Celtics will need that expiring salary to offset the J-Dub extension.
