Trade Breakdown
MIN: Malcolm Brogdon
POR: Mike Conley, 2025 UTA SRP, 2025 WAS/MEM SRP
Timberwolves Rotation
Malcolm Brogdon - Anthony Edwards - Jaden McDaniels - Karl Anthony-Towns - Rudy Gobert
Shake Milton - Nickeil Alexander-Walker - Troy Brown Jr. - Kyle Anderson - Naz Reid
Blazers Rotation
Scoot Henderson - Anfernee Simons - Shaedon Sharpe - Jerami Grant - Deandre Ayton
Mike Conley - Matisse Thybulle - Toumani Camara - Jabari Walker - Duop Reath
Why Timberwolves Do This
Conley is an old, aging, and undersized PG. Brogdon is younger by 5 years and is more productive. Taking a gamble on his injury history requires some guts, but I think they should do it. Brogdon should also be better than Conley defensively. Their defense is already stellar, this would make it even better. Brogdon should be able to play a role similar to what he was able to do last year with the Celtics, except as a starter.
Why Blazers Do This
Brogdon isn't really a part of their future. Conley won't be a part of their future either, but he can be a mentor for Scoot. He frees up cap space for the 2024 offseason, and he'll probably be a better mentor to Scoot than Brogdon just because of his long history in the league. The SRPs are a bonus on top of that which compels them to make this trade.
So, this is a very interesting trade. It's very possible that both sides pass on it. But, this might be the right move for both teams.
