With the recent rumours that Cleveland is looking to part ways with Collin Sexton, I worked up a trade that solves the warriors lack of bench talent.
For the Warriors: The biggest problem this season for the warriors has been the lack of offense from the bench after Steph and wiggs rest. With this trade they gain an elite offensive player in Collin Sexton who is now remoulded as a top tier sixth man. The warriors give up Jordan Poole who has been fantastic in starts for the warriors but with Klays return will have no chance in the starting rotation and will fall under a role where his potential will be limited. As for the other trade pieces, Eric Paschall and Alen Smailagic, these two have lost the significant roles that they had their rookie seasons and have severely fallen out of the warriors lineup. The last piece of the trade is what seals the deal for Cleveland, Minnesota’s top 3 protected pick could range in value. If the pick lands in the top 3 Minnesota gets the pick meaning if it doesn’t land in the top 3, Golden State gets a pick that ranges from 4-10. The Warriors are a team that’s trying to compete and can’t take the chances on a player that may or may not work out in the league therefore it’s a safe bet to trade it for an established player
For the Cavaliers: Collin Sexton, as talented as he is, doesn’t have the playmaking or teamwork ability in him to be a starting point guard and doesn’t have the height to be a starting shooting guard. Collin would excel in a sixth man role and I can’t see him accepting a sixth man role in a rebuilding team like Cleveland. In this trade, the Cavs receive a young star-in-the-making in Jordan Poole. Jordan Poole has looked legit starting for the warriors averaging a bit over 20ppg. In Cleveland, Poole would fit right into the starting Shooting Guard spot as a taller, more legit 2 than Sexton was. With a bigger role and more minutes, Cleveland may have found another franchise piece next to Garland, Okoro and Allen. Eric Paschall could find himself a larger role in Cleveland, possibly even in the starting line up depending where Cleveland stands with Kevin Love. Alen Smailagic could also show up in a bigger role with Cavs as a stretch 4/5. Finally the last piece in the trade, Minnesota’s pick. Cleveland can definitely benefit from even more young talent and considering that they’re still a while away from competing, so taking a chance on a prospect and it fails doesn’t really hurt the team. Cleveland is in a good situation where they already have good odds at a top 3 pick so losing the pick to Minnesota means they just get Minnesota’s pick the following year and get another shot at a good, young prospect.
