With the Mavs keeping their 2023 1st round pick, Knicks do not have any picks in 2023. However, Knicks potentially have 4 1st round picks in 2024 and 2 2nd round picks in 2024.
Knicks trade for the Lakers 17th pick in this years draft and trade the best 1st round pick (top 12 protected or lottery protected) to the Lakers plus a 2nd round pick.
Knicks do this to get some young talent with a pick right after the lottery selections and avoid having potentially 4 1st round picks and 2 2nd round picks in 2024.
Lakers do this because they are compiling 2024 picks to potentially draft Bronny while collecting an additional 2nd round pick. They still have the 47th pick to draft in 2023. The trade would save a little in cap space this year, when they need to resign their own free agents and manage the second apron of the new CBA. They also don't need 2 players to develop so drafting at 47 should be enough to develop new talent as well as last year's talent (Christie, Pippen, Swider). They also will have a fairly deep team (if they resign their own free agents) so rookies won't see much playtime.
