A Smart Draft-day trade that breaks my heart...

FAILED

SN: I'm not a warriors fan, but I'm a huge Steph fan. I only like this trade if we assume the spurs DON'T win the chip this year.

Steph wants to keep playing, potentially for a few more years. But unless they get Giannis back, Golden State is not going to trade significant draft capital to build around him. They've already wasted basically the last five years of his career (he won one, but not with any real help from the front office). For reference, Golden State has all but one of their future firsts. Milwaukee has like one first because they are a team they traded everything to give him a chance.

So if they're not going to build around him, trade him to a team that will give him a serious chance to win.

For GSW,

  • it gives them an all-star quality player back in De'Aaron Fox

  • some solid role playing talent

  • some firsts and seconds

  • All of this will help them avoid the rebuild that they've been so terrified of all these years

  • At this point, Steph is older. There's the chance he takes a step back (though he keeps defying age), and the teams that would trade for him don't have a lot of capital to use. Maybe he could get one more first, but I doubt it.

  • Get off Dray's contract, which will be difficult if you wait until after Steph is gone to try to move it

For the spurs:

  • Upgrade over De'Aaron Fox to pair the greatest shooter of all time with the most interesting (and one day, maybe best) big man of all time.

  • Steph Curry and Steph Castle fit perfectly together as the perfect backcourt.

  • Draymond is the perfect front court mate with Victor

  • Resign Harrison Barnes on a smaller contract, a guy that has won a ring with Dray and Steph before, and rotate between him, carter bryant and Luke Kornet in completing your starting (depending on what makes sense)

  • And keep Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant in the trade as well to grow under Steph and Dray. A few years from now when the vets retire, you'll still have super talented young guys to keep the train moving.

  • Dray's contract expires at the same time Vic's new one kicks in, so you can renegotiate with him for a lower number if he chooses to stay in the league a little longer. Steph will need to re-up, but that should be fine. And Steph/Dray will likely retire before you have to pay Dylan Harper.
