Zubac To Indiana

SUCCESS

INDIANA PACERS

Ivica Zubac is heading to the Indiana Pacers for Bennedict Mathurin, Isaiah Jackson, Indiana's 2026 first-rounder top five protected, Indiana's 2029 first-rounder, and a second-round pick. Indiana finally finds their paint anchor on both ends and addresses their center position perfectly. A frontcourt of Pascal Siakam and Ivica Zubac is a quality defensive frontcourt. This trade also silently prevents the Pacers from taking a center in the 2026 NBA Draft solely for the sake of drafting for need, but they need to tank to keep their 2026 first-rounder here. It is absolutely critical. Their trade grade is contingent upon getting a top pick in May 2026, but they need to tank to be able to be in position to draft the better version of Bennedict Mathurin, that being AJ Dybantsa of BYU. Therefore, the dream scenario for the Pacers is the draft lottery rewards them, and they ideally form this starting lineup in Indiana to open the 2026-27 NBA season:

Tyrese Haliburton - Andrew Nembhard - AJ Dybantsa - Pascal Siakam - Ivica Zubac

Alternatively, this lineup would also work well for the Pacers to open the 2026-27 NBA season:

Tyrese Haliburton - Darryn Peterson - Aaron Nesmith - Pascal Siakam - Ivica Zubac

Cameron Boozer of Duke does not fit as well, but Darryn Peterson of Kansas and AJ Dybantsa of BYU are two names that the Pacers should key in on as they should ideally retain their pick (they need to try to be the NBA's worst team just for this season to retain that pick) and to fully optimize this trade and reap the fruits of optimizing their starting lineup in order to return to the NBA Finals in 2027 after a down year.

Trade Grade (if either of the two above starting lineups are formed): A

Trade Grade (if they lose their pick or draft a worse fit): C-

It's a bit of an all-or-nothing move with considerable risk for the Pacers, but now is the time to act and act with clarity, seeing what was given up.

LOS ANGELES CLIPPERS

The Clippers prosper in this trade because this trade has now established a young backcourt of Darius Garland and Bennedict Mathurin for them. Centers are aplenty and can be easily replaceable, via trade or a future free agency period, and most especially centers of the same archetype as Ivica Zubac. That said, they did get a center in return in Isaiah Jackson, but this trade did hurt their chances of winning now, and they don't own their own first-rounder in the 2026 NBA Draft. Therefore, regardless of starting lineups and future outlooks, the Clippers should be rooting for the Pacers to win this upcoming season. Their starting lineup right now looks like this:

Darius Garland - Bennedict Mathurin - Kawhi Leonard - John Collins - Brook Lopez

Trade Grade (if the 2026 Pacers' first-rounder conveys to them): A

Trade Grade (if the 2026 Pacers' first-rounder does not convey to them): A-

Overall, the Clippers added a young scorer for a center archetype that can ultimately be replaced soon by them. This trade becomes extremely rewarding for them if the Pacers do not tank or the draft lottery is disadvantageous to the Pacers, but even otherwise, they get a future pick from the Pacers plus a wing scorer in Bennedict Mathurin on the timeline of Darius Garland. As a franchise in dire need of young talent, the combination of Bennedict Mathurin, the draft capital, and the fact that Los Angeles is a free agency destination that could attract a replacement center (irrespective of quality) of Ivica Zubac's archetype makes this trade rewarding for them.

Ultimately, the Pacers took a significant risk and need to focus on losing, in order to make the most of a down year. AJ Dybantsa is the optimal fit for the Pacers and Darryn Peterson is also a solid option for them. The Pacers should not lose sight of them. Therefore, this trade could go extremely well or very awry quickly, with the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery becoming the moment of truth and unveiler of reality for what will come for the franchise. Meanwhile, adding young talent with chips on their shoulder (Darius Garland and Bennedict Mathurin may be both wanting to prove themselves on the Clippers and their styles of play actually complement one another well) plus draft capital for a center that they can draft and develop late in any given upcoming draft or future free agency period as a premier free agent destination playing in Los Angeles could be a quiet boon for the Clippers.
