Kings do this for two reasons…first, they add defense and length on the wing with Jimmy starting and Haywood off the bench and more defense and rebounding inside with Kessler. Second, they move on from DeMar who was a bad signing to begin with and doesn’t mesh with this team. Even if Jimmy walks at the end of the year, you’ve added a piece to try for a push this year and gotten out from under DeMar’s contract for the following 2 years. If he exercises his option you still have his contract one less year than DeMar and he’s a better defender and probably a better fit overall.

Miami adds more depth and scoring to stay competitive now while also adding a couple picks.
