In order to completely understand the moves a team makes the timeline of events must be listed as well.

Pre Draft

  • Waive Lindy Waters non guaranteed contract to allow him to seek opportunity elsewhere

  • As a part of a much larger 5 team deal the Thunder acquire Clint Capella from the Hawks in exchange for a 2025 Heat FRP and also move from pick 12 to pick 10.

Draft

  • Pick 10 the Thunder select Donovan Clingan

    • Explanation: The Thunder luck into the best big man on the board. He gets to sit a year behind Capella and Holmgren getting accustom to the physicality and game before being really relied upon.

Free Agency

  • The Thunder spend a good amount of time not really taking action before eventually agreeing to trade Josh Giddey for Deni Avdija. They also swap out the better of the Thunder/Clippers/Nuggets 2027 pick with the Wizards pick.

    • Explanation: While Giddey has been good on the Thunder he was unable to close games in the playoffs. Deni Avdija brings a high IQ and great defensive skills to the team while also a good shooting and passing combination that has yet to be unlocked.

  • Dennis Smith Jr signs a 1 year minimum contract.

  • Troy Brown Jr signs a 1 year minimum contract.

Start of Season

Starting lineup:

  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

  • Isaiah Joe

  • Lu Dort

  • Jalen Williams

  • Chet Holmgren

The bench is still one of the deepest in the league with Cason Wallace, Aaron Wiggins and Kenrich Williams all returning. In addition to those 3 Avdija and Capella bring a new defensive force. The bench is the best defensive bench in the league by a large margin. Clingan, DSJ and Jaylin Williams bring a similar defensive mindset when they get opportunities.

During the season

With an offense that is top 5 in the league and a defense that is improved when the bench comes in the Thunder start the year off with 12 straight wins. The only blemish to their season halfway through is the pairing of Capella and SGA as they realizes what Capella's limitations are and use him when they can. Ultimately he was only here for a year so he is shopped at the deadline. The return they seek however is never met and they continue on with the best record in the league.
