🔥🔥 Miami Heat: "The Culture Superteam"
Verdict: Pat Riley’s final build.
The Logic: After acquiring Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell in 2025 cash in chips on a risky but high upside Morant and a real number 2 on an afforadble contract in Murphy.
Why they do it:
The Big Three: A core of Ja Morant ($39.4M), Bam Adebayo, and Trey Murphy III ($25M) gives Miami elite scoring, shooting, and defense.
Defensive Identity: Replacing Wiggins with Trey Murphy III keeps elite defense. Smart, way past his prime, but still a dog in the locker room and functional. Larson starting next to Morant gives us a glue guy with defense to help cover his shortfalls.
Frontcourt Spacing: Santi Aldama ($18.5M) might be what we hoped Jovic would be. Whether starting next to Bam or backing up Ware/Jovic he gives us a lot of optionality.🐻 Memphis Grizzlies: "The Timeline Pivot"
Verdict: A hard reset to build around the "Gen Z" core while remaining competitive.
The Logic: With Desmond Bane already gone and Ja Morant likely aging out of the team's new timeline (or requesting out), Memphis pivots fully to the future. They hand the keys to Zach Edey, GG Jackson, Jaylen Wells, and Cedric Coward.
Why they do it:
The Bridge Scorer: Tyler Herro ($31M) acts as the perfect high-volume scorer to keep the offense afloat while the young core develops. He fits the timeline better than Ja and can be flipped or extended on a short deal later.
Clearing the Decks: Moving off the long-term money of Morant and the newly extended Aldama clears massive cap space for the future.
Competence: Herro getting a short extension to come off books when young core is ready to get their first extensions is manages two timelines.🟣🟡 Los Angeles Lakers: "The Iron Wall"
Verdict: A fix their biggest weakness—point-of-attack and wing defense—without sacrificing leverage.
The Logic: The Lakers need defenders who can survive playoff series against the likes of Shai, Luka, and Ant. They sacrifice a future pick (2031 1st) and Rui Hachimura to land three elite defensive specialists.
Why they do it:
Andrew Wiggins: The Lakers finally get the athletic, two-way wing (approx. $28M) they have coveted to pair with Luka and Bron.
POA Defense: Davion Mitchell ($11.6M) and John Konchar ($6.1M) give the Lakers an "Off-Night" button for opposing guards and a glue guy who does the dirty work.
Efficiency: Moving Gabe Vincent ($11.5M) and Rui Hachimura (expiring/non-extended) turns inconsistent rotation players into solidified starters/closers.⚜️ New Orleans Pelicans: "The Asset Harvest"
Verdict: Selling high on a luxury asset to restock the war chest.
The Logic: Sell High on Trey Murphy, get picks and build around younger core. They flip him for a big haul of future value (by current CBA standards), and still keep the Herb Jones and Zion Contracts to leverage into additonal picks.
Why they do it:
Double Firsts: Getting two 2031 First Round Picks (from Miami and Lakers) is a goldmine. I'd imagine the Lakes pick would have moderate protections and the Miami pick would need to unprotected. making them extremely valuable.
Youth & Depth: Jaime Jaquez Jr. (on a cheap rookie deal) is a plug-and-play starter who replicates some of Murphy's production at a fraction of the cost.
Wing Size: Rui Hachimura provides veteran scoring punch and size to round out the rotation. Likely gets flipped later.
