CHARLOTTE HORNETS
Charlotte pairs two of the top three prospects in the 2023 NBA Draft by acquiring Scoot Henderson for Tidjane Salaun, Liam McNeeley, and a 2027 Dallas first-round pick. The Hornets make this trade in order to acquire a key two-way slashing point guard who can stabilize their offense and maximize the perimeter gravity of their sharpshooting wing duo of Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller. Moreover, Naz Reid is a quality three-point shooter as well, when it comes to the power forward position for Charlotte. With this much three-point shooting, a guard who can pull the defense in with his rim pressure and rim gravity would free up Charlotte's shooters on the perimeter. Therefore, with this concept in mind, Scoot Henderson would fit incredibly well in Charlotte. Furthermore, he also fits Charlotte's long-term timeline, as he is a few months younger than Brandon Miller and around a couple of years older than Kon Knueppel. That said, if both Charlotte sharpshooters live up to their high billing and Kon Knueppel develops into a version of Klay Thompson and Brandon Miller turns into a small forward similar to Paul George, then Scoot Henderson is the perfect point guard to pair with those two players. Therefore, from a long-term standpoint, the Hornets could now proceed with this starting lineup, after this trade, where each player is 27 or younger:
Scoot Henderson - Kon Knueppel - Brandon Miller - Naz Reid - Moussa Diabaté
PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS
Portland moves on from Scoot Henderson to acquire long-term forward depth. They acquire two younger players in the form of Tidjane Salaun and Liam McNeeley, as well as a potentially valuable first-round pick in the 2027 NBA Draft. After the arrival of Ja Morant in Portland to go with Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday as firmly-established veteran ball-handlers on the Trail Blazers, Portland now has a logjam at point guard. Though Scoot Henderson will still have a role in Portland, it might not be to his liking and ideally suited to his development as a young point guard in the NBA. Therefore, to maximize their current guard rotation headlined by Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, Ja Morant, and Shaedon Sharpe, the Trail Blazers choose to move on from Scoot Henderson for younger forward depth that can better support the team in the long term. Tidjane Salaun and Liam McNeeley, both of whom are younger than Scoot Henderson, check this box perfectly for the Trail Blazers. Moreover, the Dallas Mavericks are still a team in flux, meaning that the 2027 first-round pick which Portland is acquiring may be significantly more valuable than what many may regard it at first glance. Thus, given the younger forward depth (which they are in need of) and this first-round pick, it is ostensible for Portland to accept this package for Scoot Henderson.
Charlotte buys while building for the future. Portland sells while maximizing the present and balancing out their overall roster.
