CHARLOTTE HORNETS
Zion Williamson returns to play for his hometown team. To acquire the former Duke phenom with plenty of Carolina connections, the Hornets trade Grant Williams, Miles Bridges, a 2027 Miami first-round pick, and a 2027 Dallas first-round pick. During his freshman season as a member of the Duke Blue Devils, Zion Williamson was nicknamed "Zanos" by his teammates due to his uber-athletic and forceful style of play as he vigorously drove to the basket as a 6'6" 285-pound athletic specimen in college. Therefore, "Zanos" returning to North Carolina would be a perfect storyline. Ever since entering the NBA in 2019, his career has been filled with relentless question marks and constant turbulence from NBA organizations, talking heads in the NBA, executives, and fans alike. The only remedy to this incessant doubt for Zion Williamson would be to return home, where he can finally be himself, rediscover his joy for the game, and let bygones be bygones given how his seven-year NBA career as a member of the Pelicans has turned out. Rediscovering his roots as a native of Spartanburg, which is only a ninety-minute drive from Charlotte, presents many benefits for the former Duke star from both a personal and professional standpoint. The Hornets also give him a great basketball environment. With LaMelo Ball feeding him with lobs similar to how he played in high school and at Duke, Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller providing valuable floor-spacing for him, and Ryan Kalkbrenner protecting the rim for him, Zion Williamson would feel at home both on and off the court in Charlotte. Since Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel are already solid three-point shooters and Ryan Kalkbrenner is developing as a midrange shooter, he would have ample space to operate close to the basket, where LaMelo Ball would consistently find him. Regardless of whether or not he may be worth two first-round picks at the moment, when healthy and focused, Zion Williamson is one of the NBA's best power forwards, presents a significant upgrade over both Miles Bridges and Grant Williams for the Hornets, and is likeliest to regain his mojo and remember who he once was in Charlotte. Therefore, considering his upside, roots, and resonance with respect to the city, the Hornets make the final call to bring Zion Williamson back home and establish the following starting lineup in Charlotte:
LaMelo Ball - Kon Knueppel - Brandon Miller - Zion Williamson - Ryan Kalkbrenner
NEW ORLEANS PELICANS
As hard as it may be for the Pelicans to end the Zion Williamson era in New Orleans, the time is soon arriving. With only a handful of games remaining in the 2025-26 NBA season, the Pelicans have already been eliminated from the playoffs. Plus, Zion is averaging career lows in points and rebounds. This is an indication that a key factor, silent and hidden, is creating issues regarding his situation with the Pelicans. Something is off. Something feels off, and it has for a long while in New Orleans. Regardless, the Pelicans move on, reset, prioritize the 2027 NBA Draft by acquiring two additional first-round picks to rebuild around that year, and receive two players who play the same position as Zion Williamson on expiring deals. Miles Bridges and Grant Williams fit this description perfectly. The Pelicans should have no issue letting either power forward walk in free agency during the summer of 2027. Therefore, this trade allows the Pelicans to hit the reset button without brooding over the past or letting past issues continue to loom over and control the franchise. As a result, the Pelicans move forward with this starting lineup in New Orleans:
Dejounte Murray - Herbert Jones - Trey Murphy III - Miles Bridges - Derik Queen
The Hornets make a playoff run next season by bringing someone rooted in the Carolinas as they continue to ascend. The Pelicans move on and no longer allow past issues to rule over and define them as a team.
