EDIT: The only reason why this trade fails is because Beverley and Beasley were recently traded. This deal is possible after 60 days have passed from when they were traded in the Gobert deal some time around September 4th - 6th).
The Jazz
The Jazz are able to move Mitchell as well as multiple veterans on expiring contracts to obtain Quentin Grimes and 8 First Round Picks. 5 of the picks are unprotected (3 from NYK and 2 from LAL), with 3 being protected picks. The Jazz will buy Russell Westbrook out, and he won't play a game in a Jazz Jersey. This would be a more pick-centered deal for the Jazz, but pairing Grimes with some of the remaining young prospects on their roster (Vanderbilt, NAW) will allow them to tank effectively while still giving opportunities for young players to develop. All the remaining veterans like Conley, Gay, Fournier, and Clarkson will be highlighted in the rotation with the goal of trading them before the trade deadline for additional draft capital or expiring contracts.
The Lakers
I think if the Lakers make a deal that includes both of their first round picks (27 and 29) they will prioritize shooting, and cap flexibility for the next year. Getting Westbrook off this roster has to be priority 1, as the Lakers can't go through another season wasting Lebron's final years in the league. By making this deal, they get 4 expiring contracts that they could waive and will have close to a max contract slot available to pair with Lebron and AD next summer. I think this will allow them to compete at a high level as a playoff team this year, and give them the flexibility needed to pursue a star next year. The 4 players being sent to the Lakers in this deal probably aren't worth 2 unprotected future picks, but when you factor in Westbrook's insane contract (even with it being an expiring one) I think this makes sense from a value standpoint.
The Knicks
If the Knicks make a move for Donovan Mitchell, they will prioritize keeping as much depth as possible. I also think they will try to maintain as many picks as possible so that they can go all in for another star within the next 2-3 years. Even with 6 first round picks being sent out in this deal, I think this allows them to do both. They are able to keep RJ, IQ, and Toppin, and they will have an opportunity to trade for another piece in the near future.
At the 2025 draft, the Knicks would have the following picks available for trade: their 2025, MIL 2025, their 2030, and their 2032 pick. Having 4 picks, as well as swaps in 27, 29, and 31 would allow them to make an all in push for another star to pair with Mitchell and whoever else is considered their main core at that point.
I think this is a 3 team deal where everyone wins. What do you guys think?
