The Jazz get a very valuable pick now in exchange for a Kessler and their most valuable future asset. They need a superstar now if they want to contend in the next five years. This gives them another shot at getting that talent in this draft. It comes at the cost of their only good defender and their most valuable draft asset (outside their own pick this year).

The Pacers get a future center who can start immediately next season allowing for a quick return to contention next year. They could probably get a player than is better and cheaper than Kessler in this draft, but they would likely take two time to come up to speed and help compete. This would allow the Pacers to maximize Haliburton and Siakam’s window. If Kessler doesn’t work, than they could pay him and then trade him along side Phoenix’s pick for a better fit.
