Fitted to the Game NCAA Top 15 Rankings
Yo to the Achievers
Kansas (14-1) Big-12 Kansas is just too good, too fast, and too smart. Behind their Coach Bill Self, Jalen Wilson leads the team in scoring with 20.2 points per game shooting 41% from the field. Grady Dick’s 14.7 points per game shooting 48% from 3 keep opposing teams honest. Dajuan Harris keeps this team fluid with 6.3 assists per game. This small ball lineup with K.J. Adams gives NBA GM’s a sneak peek at exactly what type of player they are getting. Two conference road wins over the weekend keep the Jayhawks number one in my Power Rankings.
Houston (16-1) AAC The Cougars have to be one of America's favorite teams at the moment. They continue to roll under the leadership of coach Kelvin Sampson’s system. Marcus Sasser continues to prove he is among the elite scoring 15.8 points per game and shooting 83% from the free-throw line. Newcomer Jarace Walker’ gives this Houston team versatility with his ability to perform on the wing, and the paint in a small ball lineup. He had a great performance defeating Cincinnati Sunday posting 21 points and 5 rebounds. Jamal Snead continues to keep this team fluid with his 5.3 assists per game. Knocking off SMU was big for the cougars. I believe freshman Terrance Arceneaux will be a big X-factor for this club in March!
Purdue (15-1) Big-10 The Boilermakers took a loss Monday night to Rutgers that dropped them in my Power Rankings but bounced back with a quality victory over Ohio State and once again over Penn St. today. Zach Edey has played well, his averages of 21.3 points per game and grabbing 13.2 rebounds, puts him as a player of the year and considered to be the number one pick in my opinion.
Alabama (13-2) SEC Brandon Miller is elite. 19.1 points per game, 8.5 rebounds, while shooting 83% from the line and 44% from the three. Truly a contender in the SEC and for the national title. Bama looks strong in their 1st SEC battle against Miss State giving them their second loss of the season. In their following games SEC games they went back home to handle business against Ole Miss, and Kentucky.
Tennessee (13-2) SEC The Volunteers are a well-balanced group with the ability to compete in the national spotlight. Currently with four players averaging double figures. Freshman Julian Phillips is one of the best guards in the SEC posting 10 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, and shooting 81% from the line. This unit coached by Rick Barnes, one of the nation's most dangerous teams and is currently ranked #2 in the NET rankings.
UCLA (14-2) Pac-12 Stars aligned when the Bruins matched up with the Trojans. Undefeated at home UCLA held on to beat USC in a PAC 12 battle. David Singleton is one of the best 3-point shooters in the nation shooting at 49%. Jamie Jaquez is the real deal, his 17 points per game, and 6.4 rebounds in addition to Jaylen Clark’s stock rising. Clark made a play to knock down the go-ahead 3 to ultimately pushed the Bruins to a win.
Arizona (14-2) Pac-12 This team just keeps grinding, their grit in the post makes the game easy for their guards. Well-rounded and a deadly weapon behind the 3-point line, Arizona’s attack flows through Azuolas Tubelis who scores 20.6 points per game, 9.1 rebounds, and Oumar Ballo’s 16.8 points, 8.9 rebounds. Their battle with Washington was a PAC 12 duel for the ages where they pulled away with a 3-point victory. However, Saturday night suffered an upset loss to Washington St. in a battle of bigs 74-61.
Charleston (14-1) CAA This group takes on takes on the personality and swagger of their head coach Pat Kelsey. This week Dalton Bolon walked away with a double-double as they defeated NC A&T. Ante Brzovic followed with the same effort in a win against Delaware the following game. Babacar Faye contributes off the bench with great length and athleticism. Raekwon Horton is a young sophomore, 6’6 from Santee, South Carolina, who I believe is the X-factor and could put the nation on notice once the NCAA tournament rolls around.
Texas (13-2) Big-12 Being battle tested is the question of how real are the Longhorns this year. The win against Gonzaga showed they can match up with perimeter depth. The win against Stanford showed they can match up well against big lineups like theirs. When they took on Kansas St. Tuesday night, we learned what happens when you speed Texas up. When you share the ball against Texas and get busy in the paint. They gave up 58 points in both halves having monumental lapses on defense. I’m not worried I just understand these are the growing pains of this club that are veterans but fairly new playing around each other. I looked for the defensive tenacity to improve against Oklahoma State and it did and the Longhorns got the road win! Freshman Arterio Morris is an X-Factor in this club. Marcus Carr, Timmy Allen, Dillon Mitchell, Sir’Jabairi Rice, and Tyrese Hunter all are big factors and in my opinion, really good athletes to go in this year's NBA Draft.
TCU (13-2) Big-12 Mike Miles & Emanuel Miller lead a really tough group, going 1-1 over the weekend Miles managed to score 33 and 18 respectively over the two games. Beating Baylor in a down-to-the-wire game and losing a close one to Iowa St. snapping an 11-game winning streak.
UConn (15-2) Big East 6-5 Sophomore Jordan Hawkins, is a top 5 scorer (ability) in the nation this season. He poses numbers 14.8 points per game, and Adama Sanogo’s 17.9 points per game and 6.9 rebounds, make UCONN one of the best. Andrew Jackson is one of the best point forwards in the nation. After a bounce-back win against Creighton, the huskies look to get back on track.
Miami (13-2) ACC Norchad Omier's 14.7 points per game and 4.7 rebounds make him the anchor on this unit. Isaiah Wong post 16.9 points per game and 4.7 assists while shooting 83% from the free throw line, however, despite Jordan Miller’s 17 points it would not be enough to beat the Yellow Jackets.
FAU (14-1) CUSA FAU has to be one of the surprise units in the nation, with two sophomores leading their team in scoring at the moment. Alijah Martin & Johnell Davis looks to propel the Owls through the C-USA and to a tournament bid for the 1st time since 2002.
Kansas St. (14-1) Big 12 Kansas St. , The high-scoring Kansas St. With Keyontae Johnson on board to have another phenomenal season, He scored 52 points and grabbed 18 boards over his last two Big 12 wins last week. The Wildcats are truly a treat in the competitive Big 12.
Missouri (12-2) SEC Missouri is such a special team, starting the season undefeated before their tough loss to Kansas, they built quite an impressive resume defeating Kentucky, Illinois, and UCF this season. After blowing an early lead against Arkansas, Missouri looked to improve against Vanderbilt and was successful. Kobe Brown is a top-notch scorer averaging about 15.3 points a game. D’moi Hodge is one of the best 3-point shooters in the nation shooting the 3 at about a 41% clip behind the arch. The SEC is surely on its heels every time the true Tigers take the floor.
