So I first have to note that this trade is pretty unbalanced, as I'm not sure that anyone other than the Knicks would say yes. There will probably be some loud no's from Kings, Magic and Pelicans fans but I figured I'd put it together anyways. And I actually had an even more unbalanced trade that had Hawkins going to the Magic and Ellis to the Knicks but I felt that was too much. Team by team below:
Kings: I'll start off with the Kings. I'll be completely honest that this trade doesn't favor them that well. They lose Sabonis who's been solid to excellent for them and Ellis who has been a surprise 3 and D breakout. However, I also have to acknowledge that I have no clue what they're doing as this team construction is frankly a mess. They have so many ball dominant players and several who don't really take a ton of 3 pointers so this trade does get them possibly the best 3 point shooting big man in KAT. He can help stretch the floor for DeRozan, Westbrook and Murray. He is a multi time All NBA and All Star and while he has struggled to start the year, he's been playing through an injury so I think you can count on a bounce back. I also have the Kings getting the protected Washington FRP which the chance of conveying has risen due to some jumps in development by several of the Wizards young players and the weaker East. And while losing Ellis is tough, they already showed their hand by allowing him to be an unrestricted free agent in the upcoming offseason. I still don't know why they did this but it was going to be harder for them to retain him.
Pelicans: Similar to other trades, I think that the Pelicans need a better presence from their big man on defense and Mitch could really anchor this defense. Again, his health is a concern, but the effort has always been there and the ceiling that he provides this team would hopefully outweigh those injury issues. He's one of the best rebounders, including offensive rebounds and rim protectors and that could help a Pelicans team who's allowing a lot of scoring. They also get Dadiet, who isn't really much of an asset but at least it gives them a wing to try and develop who's only 20 and has 3 years remaining on his contract.
Magic: I said in previous trades that I'd love Goga Bitadze on the Knicks and I basically constructed this trade to show how that could happen. I still think it's so unlikely that the Magic let him go because he's just so consistent, he fits this Magic team and he's not too expensive. Still, I gave it a shot. The Magic lose Bitadze but gain a younger (albeit not as good) replacement center in Missi. The Magic have shown they can really develop froncourt players so I think you can bank on him improving. Also, the Magic have a stacked frontcourt and Mo Wagner is still injured and will be returning sometime. Between him, Wendell Carter and Jonathan Isaacs (who isn't a center but I think could probably fill in) they still would have a strong center rotation. I also sent Keon Ellis their way for a few reasons. One I think this Magic team still needs more 3 point shooting and Ellis more than fits the bill. He's also a solid defender which fits this Magic team. I'd love Ellis on the Knicks but I felt the Magic would need him in order to even consider picking up the phone on this (they'd probably still decline). Plus, Ellis and Mike Brown seemed to but heads last year so I'm not sure a reunion would be well received by either of them.
Knicks: And finally my team the Knicks! I'll start off by saying I'm not necessarily advocating for a KAT trade. Between the quad injury, a shooting slump that I think will pass and him learning an entirely new offensive system, I think he's going to bounce back and look excellent for the Knicks. Still, I do like the idea of Sabonis on this team as the ball movement that's been showcased during the first 4 games has shown the promise of that approach on offense. Sabonis is an incredible passer and that could wreak havoc on opposing teams. He's also a good rebounder and although isn't much on defense, neither is KAT so I think that evens out. He's also just cheaper than KAT and it would give them more financial flexibility for extensions (Deuce has more than earned a larger contract) down the road. The Knicks get Goga who's been great as a backup center and would give them a healthier and more dependable center rotation which I think goes a long way. As I've said before, I've been pleasantly surprised by Kolek's start and think he's earned his spot but Alvarado would give them another body there as well and is a proven role player. They also get a wing in Hawkins who they would hope regains his shooting stroke and is able to use his large wingspan to be a plus on defense. The depth chart would be incredible and the Knicks would have a team that is at least 12 deep and could honestly be 14 deep if Hukporti continues his development and Hawkins regains his touch.
