Knicks trade for a wing and a backup PG: Knicks/76ers/Kings

SUCCESS

I was watching CP the Fanchise' converation with Yossi Gozlan and Justin Morelli and they were discussing that they think the Knicks need to add a backup wing as that's currently missing from the team. Naji Marshall would be my top pick and it seemed like they were all high on him as well BUT - his recently play may have put him out of the Knicks price range. Another name they mentioned was Kelly Oubre who I've been a fan of in the past. He was out injured for a while but has come back and is producing well and wouldn't cost as much as Marshall would. He also has the bonus of making slightly less than Marshall which opens up the Knicks to being able to take in another player. Trading for Marshall would require at least 3 players to go out with not enough room to trade for another player which means the Knicks would either have to elevate a two-way player (Jones or McCullar probably) or to hope the buyout market has some good players they can sign (they can't sign anyone who was making over $12 million due to being a 2nd apron team). With all that said, see the team by team below for more rationale.

76ers: The 76ers are reportedly open to trading Oubre and Drummond as they look to create a roster spot for Walker and Barlow AND they reportedly want to get out of the tax. This trade doesn't get them to those goals but it does reduce their payroll and get some 2nd rounders for a player is on an expiring contract and may not be there next year. Yabu isn't really an asset due to his poor play but he did put up good numbers last year there so they clearly now how to get more out of him than the Knicks do (albeit in an injury ravaged year last season). Still, the main reason for them to make this trade is to reduce the salary and get some draft capital. The other factor is if they would want to trade with the Knicks, a division rival, but I'd hope they would.

Kings: The Kings are having a lost season of sorts but do have the benefit of owning their own 2026 pick so losing games can help them to get a better draft position. Westbrook has been great for them this year and losing him would definitely make them worse! They get a second round pick for a player they signed late in the offseason and who's on an expiring contract as well. Clarkson is a microwave scorer but is also on an expiring so they're not taking up any long term salary. Dadiet is under contract for several more seasons BUT is only 20 years old and on a cheap contract so they could try and see if there's a role player there. He's not really an asset in terms of trade value as he's barely seen the floor but the Kings are looking to rebuild and have more time for a project like Dadiet than the Knicks do.

Knicks: The primary goal of this trade was to add a wing, which is difficult in this market as there's not really many available, and the ones that are may be out of the Knicks price range (see my take on Marshall above). That leaves Oubre as someone who could fit the bill as he's 6'8" and is a solid wing. He's not coming in as a starter by any means but as someone to fill the non-OG minutes, he could be good. He can score and defend (I remember him being really annoying when he was guarding Brunson in the playoffs) and he also brings that fire and attitude that I think has been missing from this Knicks team. The Knicks are also looking for a backup PG as it doesn't seem they're convinced that Kolek is the answer. He's had a good season and has definitely improved, but the playoffs are a different beast and Westbrook has more experience there. He's a divisive player, and historically has not be a good 3 point shooter. BUT! He's shooting well from 3 this year, can score and distribute well and again bring that fire and attitude I think the Knicks need. Plus, if the Knicks do trade for Oubre, they're really limited in who they can bring back for a backup PG without trading one of the core guys (no way Deuce is going anywhere unless its a Giannis trade and Shamet seems to have cemented himself in the rotation as well). So that means the Knicks are looking at minimum guys and Westbrook is probably the best guy remaining unless the Knicks either want to go with Kolek or hope the buyout market has a solution. There's definitely an argument that Westbrook is not what the Knicks need but again, I'm trying to be realistic in who they CAN conceivably get. They would be at 13 players as well and would need to sign at least one more player to get to the roster minimum. I'm not even sure that the Knicks could navigate the buyout market because of this so it's likely the two-way players that would be considered. Also, quick note, as with Marshall, if the Knicks trade for only Oubre, they still don't have much left over in salary and would likely be facing the same proposition unless they sending out a 3rd player anyways and just bring back Oubre. And then they'd still be facing the same issue. Anyways! I like this depth chart a bit more than what we have right now and the other bonus is that we've added size to the lineup. As for filling out the rest of the roster, it would be amazing if Drummond gets bought out and the Knicks signed him but I don't see that happening. My guess is that either Dillon Jones or Kevin McCullar get one spot and Trey Jeminson gets another as some backup big insurance in case of an injury to Mitch or foul trouble from KAT/Hukporti.

PG: Brunson, Westbrook, Kolek

SG: Bridges, Deuce

SF: Hart, Shamet
