Two team trade: Knicks add some juice to their bench, Lakers add 3 point shooting

SUCCESS

The Knicks and Lakers both need to make some moves, albeit for different reasons. The Knicks have looked great since the OG trade but the bench has also looked like it needs some help. The Lakers have had an up and down season and are still lacking 3 point shooters to spread the floor. They're most definitely a win now team but one with limited assets. The trade lets both teams get closer to their goals.

Knicks: As I said above, since the loss of IQ, the creation on the bench unit has been rough. The Knicks went from having a strong bench to one of the weaker ones. DLo played some of his best ball while in NYC (albeit in Brooklyn) and the Knicks could use his scoring and distribution on the second unit. He's on a player option for next season so the Knicks could use his salary in the offseason for that true star trade that they're rumored to be going for. They also get a backup big in Christian Wood who could fill some minutes if Hartenstein misses more time. They also have struggled in general with the minutes behind Hartenstein and this gives them another option in case Achiuwa struggles. He's had some good moments but Wood is a more seasoned veteran (albeit one that isn't a defensive stopper like Thibs likes). They also get Max Christie who gives them a prospect to either develop or flip in a future trade. They get a couple of second rounders as I don't think it's realistic to hope for a FRP if Fournier is going out, even if they are getting some decent players.

Lakers: The Lakers have needed 3 point shooting all year and this trade gets them 2 players who excel at it. Fournier hasn't seen much play the last couple of seasons but he's a consummate professional who's kept himself ready and is a veteran that many around the league respect. He's always been a good 3 point shooter and is on a team option for next season so he wouldn't represent long term salary for the Lakers (unless they wanted to opt in for that year and flip him for another player in the offseason). Grimes is the real prize here as they get a great 3 point shooter who can thrive without the ball in his hands AND who adds great defense. They also don't give up a FRP which could help them make other moves either before the deadline or in the offseason. I think there's a version of this trade where they try to take on a player like Brogdon who gives them a PG but I tried to keep it simple.
