Expanding the Yabu trade: Knicks get Kris Dunn and Nick Richards

SUCCESS

News just broke that the Knicks have traded Yabu for Dalen Terry of the Bulls. This is a good bit of work by the Knicks since they didn't have to give up any draft equity. However, while Dalen Terry may be worth taking a flier on, the Knicks might re-route him elsewhere if they expand the trade. There also might be the option of trading him straight up for another player as he can still be traded (just not aggregated with any other players). The Pelicans have been resistant to trading Alvarado and have reportedly been a difficult front office to negotiate with so why not pivot to another player? Plus, the other teams involved are incentivized to either duck the tax or get younger so it might not take any draft equity. Team by team below.

Bulls: This part already happened so I won't focus on it. Yabu is a Bull now and they reportedly want to keep him around. I hope he does well there, he seems like a great person and deserves to do well in a better situation for him, the Knicks just weren't a good fit.

Clippers: Once the Clippers traded Harden for Garland, the rebuild was on. Their goal should be to clear salary and get younger and this trade does just that. They can take a flier on Terry and if it doesn't work out, let him go at the end of the season. Dunn is 31 so they're getting younger as well and also slightly decreasing their salary which lowers the tax bill. They also add Clarkson who's on an expiring and gets them to 14 players on the roster (the minimum required). They still may waive him to make room for their two way players.

Suns: The Suns are looking to trade Richards and duck the tax and were reportedly willing to attach draft equity to do so. Here they let him go in exchange for a young wing in Dadiet.

Knicks: Since Alvarado may be out of reach, why not pivot to an experienced PG like Dunn? He's also known as a good defender and is slightly taller at 6'3" than their current options. Kolek has been great but the Knicks may want a more experienced option and Dunn is a good fit. For the record, I think Lonzo Ball would be an interesting candidate but I'm not sure where he's going yet. The Knicks also add Richards as insurance for KAT's (and Hukporti's) foul trouble and Mitch's health. He's a solid backup and can soak up minutes to help load manage. The Knicks sightly decrease their salary so they could hopefully grab a wing on the buyout market and promote one of Jones or McCullar to a standard contract and get to 15 players.

PG: Brunson, Dunn, Kolek

SG: Bridges, Deuce

SF: Hart, Shamet

PF: Anunoby, Diawara

C: KAT, Mitch, Richards/Hukporti
