Yet Another KAT trade: Knicks/Clippers/Hornets/Suns

SUCCESS

I'll say this first that I don't think this would happen and in some ways I don't want to see KAT traded (especially now when his value is lower) but this is one that I would consider for it. The other would be a KAT for Hartenstein and Dort but I don't think there's any universe that happens in.

Clippers: After the Harden trade, it's clear that the Clippers are pivoting towards a rebuild. However they still don't have their own pick in 2026 and in 2027 they have a pick swap with the Thunder. So they're in a weird position where losing doesn't benefit them that much and getting younger players on shorter contracts would appeal to them. They get Miles Bridges from the Hornets who's 7 years younger than Kawhi and who's contract is for the same length of time. Sexton has been solid and is also on an expiring so they can get more money off their books after this season. They do take on Yabu's contract but he's motivated to make it work and would get far more time for a rebuilding team like the Clippers and could rebuild his value (or there is the scenario where he goes overseas). Dunn is also on the wrong side of 30 so I don't think they'd mind losing him either. Overall, they go for an upside player in Bridges and break down Kawhi's contract into smaller pieces. They're also just $1.2 million from the tax and I'd bet there's a buyout (Chris Paul) or another trade to duck the tax completely.

Suns: The Suns are trying to duck the tax and were even considering attaching a 2nd round pick to Richards to get off of his contract. While Dadiet isn't really an asset, he is at least young and cheaper than Richards so the Suns might go for this without any draft compensation trading sides.

Hornets: The Hornets have actually had a solid year and have looked much better than expected. Why not add an All-Star center to the mix? Bridges has been good for him but I think he'll be looking for an extension and a raise soon and I'm not sure the Hornets want to pay him. Sexton is expiring so it's not a huge loss either. Diabate is probably the hardest part of this, but they don't give up any draft compensation and still have Kalkbrenner.

Knicks: Kawhi has been having a great year and while he may have be snubbed by the fans and coaches for an All-Star pick, he got a deserved selection from the league. The Knicks are taking a risk because of his health but I think he's raises their ceiling. Plus, this allows the Knicks to go all in on defense with a lineup boasting 3 great defensive wings in Bridges, Anunoby and Kawhi plus Mitch at center. That's a lockdown team that can also cover better for Brunson's shortcomings on defense (which I think do exist but are overblown). They get a backup PG in Dunn who has more experience and is better defensively than Kolek. They also get two backup centers in Diabate who's looked great for the Hornets this year and Richards who is a dependable center. They also shed a bit in salary and still have a roster spot open. I'd imagine they try to sign a wing if they get bought out (Niang? Highsmith? Thybulle? Love?) or convert one of their two way players. With they exception of Richards, they also secure semi long term contracts to give them more flexibility to extend Mitch and resign Hukporti and Diawara. Depth chart below.

PG: Brunson, Dunn, Kolek

SG: Bridges, Deuce

SF: Kawhi, Hart, Shamet

PF: Anunoby, Diawara

C: Mitch, Diabate, Richards/Hukporti
