Knicks utilize the buyout market

SUCCESS

So this is a boring one but is more of a placeholder to discuss the Knicks options ahead of the trade deadline. There's been a ton of movement over the weekend as the NBA has truly had some seismic trades that have re-shaped the league. This has created two things which the Knicks can take advantage of:

  1. Teams in the trade have new needs or have needs that have been exacerbated by the trades (ie the Lakers need for a center has become even more pressing)

  2. The buyout market is likely to grow as facilitator teams are taking on extra contracts and will have to make cuts (Bulls, Jazz so far, but likely to grow)

While there is some noise about the Lakers wanting Mitch, I'm not sure if the return for that would help the Knicks all that much. Hachimura makes too much for it to work and I think the Lakers would want a better return for him. Vanderbilt would make some sense but he just came back from injury and I'm not sure the Knicks would want to swap an injured center for a recovering PF. And I doubt that the Lakers would want a player who's currently injured either!

However, I do think that Jericho Sims is likely going to be traded and the Lakers could be someone who is interested. The Knicks could probably get a 2nd round pick for him and the main reason they trade him is so they could either make a small trade (Javonte Green?) or have 2 open roster spots to use with the buyout market.

As I said above, the buyout market may be the best option. In this scenario, I have them signed Mo Bamba, who would replace the departed Jericho Sims. Thibs has done a great job with centers over the years and maybe coming to his hometown team would help Bamba. The Knicks would be leaning on Achiuwa in the meantime and he's really stepped it up in recent weeks. And the Knicks would still bring back Mitch, so the center rotation would be pretty much set.

For the final spot, the Knicks could look to the likely soon-to-be-available Bulls players like Torrey Craig, Chris Duarte or Talen Horton-Tucker.
