So why on earth does each team do it. On the surface its kinda nuts. The heat should be tanking and they are trading a draft pick? The Knicks are competing and they are trading a core part of their team and a guy they seem to think is promising for a draft pick? Well heres my thoughts.

Knicks: If nothing else was clear this season, something about the knicks starting 5 didn't work. Not only in the regular season when they were net 0.0 since january, but also in the playoffs when they were a net -6.2 in 335 minutes togehter(still more than any single lineup has played in the finals this year btw). This deal sees Knicks moving on froom Josh Hart for duncan Robinson, a fantastic and willing shooter(who doesnt do much else tbh). In addition, the knicks get pick 20 where they can look to pick up a wing if a guy like cedric coward is available or maybe a Liam Mcneely. Other guys like will riley, asa newell, or someonoe else who slips farther than expected(which always happens) could be available and play roles as extremely cheap but viable rotation pieces. There is also the benefit of Duncan Robinson being on an expiring deal which will give the knicks loads mre flexibility even if they want to resign duncan(as it will be a cheaper deal for sure).

Heat: So how do the heat justify trading a late first and an expiring deal for Josh Hart. Imo its simple, the Heat clearly still want to compete, and hart is a perfect 6 man for almost any team. In addition, the Heat get a real point guard prospect in Tyler Kolek who should be able to play real minutes for this team. Hart doesn't push this team to contention like Kd may have, but you can get behind a lineup of Herro, Wiggins, Haywood, Bam, Ware with a bench of Hart, Jaquez, Jovic, and Kolek. That team is at least 8 strong players deep and potentially 9+ with how view Kolek, Pelle, and Keshad Johnson. Also some supporting numbers, the heat were bottom 10 of the league in rebounds and transition points this past year, Hart's 2 best traits are his transition and rebounding.
