The Lakers have several reasons to do this deal. When something isn’t working, there’s value in changing it. The Lakers are in the midst of a second consecutive disappointing season. If they don’t have a sudden and drastic turnaround, making changes for their own sake might be wise. Moreover, pairing LeBron James with a co-star who doubles as a knockdown shooter may be more rational than continuing to pair him with Davis. Yes, the pair won a title together – but they haven’t come remotely close to replicating that feat.
