Knicks get two young wings: trades with Kings and Blazers

SUCCESS

The Knicks have been having a good season, but I'm still not sure they have a championship winning lineup. It's very close though and the main issue at this point is depth, especially from their wings. I do think there's also an argument that the Knicks need a backup point guard and center. Kolek has been great this season, but I'm a bit worried about how he'll do in the playoffs and of course Mitch's health is always a concern (and KAT and Hukporti are both a bit foul prone). But I did leave that 15th roster spot open (if they go for a PG, Westbrook would be cool and if it's a center, then Landale and Bagley are good options). But to this trade, this would get the Knicks two wings who both have flaws, but who I think would fit well and this coaching staff could get more out of. Team by team below.

Blazers: The Blazers are still in the rebuild but the team is looking like it has more promise than ever. There's a good mix of veterans and prospects and you can see the vision. Still, Murray feels like a player that they've mostly moved on from as he mainly only gets significant minutes when other players are out injured. So someone like Yabu plus a second rounder feels like fair value for him. I could possibly see another 2nd round pick, but again, I don't think Murray will be in Portland much longer, whether via a trade or just electing to not extend him. Yabu would be able to slide right in and would fit this system better than he does in Mike Brown's where he expects more a "hub" role for the big men. Plus, he's on a reasonable salary, and is a good leader in the locker room.

Kings: The Kings are having a truly dissapointing season but they do have the advantage of owning their own 2026 first round pick. This means that if they pivot to a tank, it could pay off for them. They also reportedly want a first round pick for Ellis which frankly seems like an over-valuation given that he's seen drastically reduced playing time and hasn't looked great when he's on the floor. So I think a second round pick plus the protected first round pick from Washington that the Knicks have is fair. Dadiet is mostly here for salary but at least he's only 20 and has the 3 and D profile that teams are looking for.

Knicks: The injuried to Deuce and Shamet have exposed a weakness of depth at the wing and with good defensive players. Ellis and Murray both have good defensive qualities and good length with some crazy wingspans as well. Plus, while both aren't shooting that well this season (and for Murray, not great in previous seasons as well) the Knicks shooting coaches have done a great job with Hart this season and Mitch is now making free throws!!!! So I do feel like both Ellis and Murray could benefit from them and hopefully produce more on offense. And while Ellis also did see his minutes decrease under Brown last season, I think Brown would know better how to get the best out of Ellis. The depth chart looks much more balanced and players like OG would get more rest which is important come playoff time. As I said above, I'm still a bit worried about the PG and Center depth, but there's the 15th roster spot to get that last player, whether through a buyout or a trade. Depth chart below.

PG: Brunson, Kolek

SG: Bridges, Deuce, Clarkson

SF: Hart, Ellis, Shamet

PF: Anunoby, Murray, Diawara

C: KAT, Mitch, Hukporti
