Orlando Magic Summer League Roster Post With Descriptions!

The descriptions are only for the guys who I’ve seen do stuff not the scrubs.

Starters:

PG: Jase Richardson | A dynamic scorer from all three levels, elite off the dribble and stationary shooting, really good at creating outside the arc and getting himself an open shot. Inside he has the speed and agility to drive by slower defenders and get to the cup at will, if a defender sticks on him or there’s a big to block him he just finished with an off hand though contact to get a crazy layup. Mid range is average. His playmaking is below average but against Sacramento on Thursday night he showcased his court vision and accuracy on passes, on a couple occasions his shot creation would cause the defense to collapse so he could kick it out or to an open cutter, which I thought is the seeds of a developing playmaker showing themselves. Defensively doesn’t wield as much of a game as you would like, gets beat on drives a lot and can overcommit, doesn’t give enough effort from what I’ve seen recently but with Orlando’s grit and grind style I think he develop the drive and effort he needs, slightly undersized and without physical tools to correctly contest shots. Been extremely good at getting to the FT line and making the shots.

SG: Ethan Thompson | Offensively been way quieter than I expected, hasn’t made a bunch of key shots, been getting to the line well and scoring efficiently, very one sided though because he can’t play-make and doesn’t seem to have much of a care that he’s got teammates, doesn’t defend whatsoever, doesn’t crash the glass, don’t think he’s gonna get a roster spot, maybe a two-way again. Good handle but can be poked quite easily by good defenders.

SF: Tristan Da Silva | Da Silva so far in the summer league has been uber successful, he was extremely efficient on 3pt attempts (2/3) against Sacramento and even though it’s a relatively small sample size they were hard threes, one with two defenders contesting him and running to him to almost get a hand on the ball, but he stayed calm and confident with his shot for a swish 3. On the inside he has been a solid enough scorer, not sure fire buckets but consistent and clearly had moves to get him an open shot, lacks size inside at 6’8 but only 210 lbs, but length and good use of size help him get good shots, he showed a lot of offensive leadership at times, for example when the Stockton Kings were crushing them in the first half he stayed strong and kept composure, being patient and letting open shots come to him instead of forcing it, this kind of slowing the pace is important when having prospects who want to push harder than they can go. He had really good defense on the interior and was a good rebounder, lacks playmaking but makes decent reads and doesn’t throw into traffic. Been the team leader and helped everyone develop like bringing out Jase Richardsons playmaking.

PF: Noah Penda | Offensively we haven’t seen much yet, single digit scoring and lack of presence have made him seem lousy offensively, but in reality he just had a slow, patient start to the league, being a quiet guy who can be a 5-10 PPG scorer and contribute without making him get a lot of pressure on shots, many times a defender slouches off and he cuts inside for an easy shot, he had 4 Assists and Sacramento and showed adequate understanding of where the ball should go, he lacked from 3 (0/3) but that could just be a fluke and I trust him to recover his mojo. Defensively he did what people expected of him, got multiple steals and locked up who they had him guard, definitely did what was expected of him and that’s great, I also trust that his size will allow him to get blocks and push big guys out of the paint. Especially against the raptors he had 2 steals in the first quarter and locked up anyone he had too, from CMB to the end of the bench, made some 3pt shots and was great inside. And the times he was turning the ball over multiple times and making stupid violations I think he just had the jitters, proven by a second game jump in confidence and stats, lots of defense and efficiency.

C: Kyler Kelly | Just length and size, gets bullied, slow, doesn’t seem to have a motor, not good offensively and on defense is weak outside of inside rim protection, doesn’t seem to have much skill at all, no outside scoring, mostly a rebounder, doesn’t play-make, wish Skal Labissiere started over him.

Backups:

SG/PG Jalen Crutcher | Decent 3pt shooting, very streaky but has a nice shot and I can see him becoming more consistent, fast, skinny, lanky, guard who isn’t particularly strong at any one thing but has a decent handle, agile defender, athletic, not really to strong at anything imo.

C Skal Labissiere | Offensively he isn’t good at iso or 1v1 on the inside, but he has a nice put back game with multiple dunks after offensive rebounds, great offensive rebounder, shows great effort and has great length to grab the boards and slams it down really well off the rebound. On defense has had some minor struggles but all in all a decent rim protector, getting stats of, 2 blocks against the kings, 1 block against the Raptors, and three against the Thunder. Had trouble with fouling instead of blocking against the Raptors for example.

Other Semi Important Players:

SF/SG Wendell Moore Jr. | Most impressive parts of his game are his rebounding for his size (6’5 215 Lbs), and his ability to get in the lane, he is a small but strong forward who can push defenders of their feet and get foul calls, is a decent playmaker who makes the right decisions and has accuracy on his shot, needs to work on getting his 3 and his handle to work but he was a stellar defender as a prospect and has been a strong stealer who pokes the ball out and runs in transition to fight for the ball, also outstanding rebounding so far having 10 against the raptors with 4 offensive boards.

SG Alonde Williams | From what I’ve seen I would classify him as a strong playmaker, a guy who can defend both ways, and someone who is meant to fit into a bench role well, against the Raptors for example he had 2 blocks and 1 steal, having a solid defensive game and an extraordinary 3pt shooting game, 4/4. He did it all with 14pts but against OKC he was 2/10 from the field and 0/5 from 3, way to streaky and seemed like a stroke of luck against the Raptors, but what I saw most of a flaw, his turnovers, careless passes, bad dribbling, poor decision making, violations, just has to realize the whole game around him.
