The Orlando Magic have a overabundance of guards on their team, and it would probably make a lot more sense to move on from one. While Suggs has been the asset on the table this summer, I could see Cole Anthony being moved instead. Suggs is a better passer and defender, and Anthony’s skillset isn’t uncommon for guards in the NBA. Anthony’s value on the market is also more than Suggs, which the Magic might have a problem retaining along with trying to keep Fultz, Wagner, and Banchero over the next 2 summers.
The Magic get an protected Bucks 29’ first to discard the burden of resigning Cole Anthony in a jam-packed free agency next year, along with Pat Connaughton, who could be a rotation veteran for the Magic over his contract. If there’s an issue with value, note a couple of trades in the past calendar year:
The Hawks sent 5 second round picks to the Warriors in the 4-team Wiseman deadline deal for Saddiq Bey
The Blazers gave up a 25 first to the Pistons for an expiring Jerami Grant
Likely, the first will convey in the late teens of the draft. Which is perfect value for Anthony.
The Milwaukee Bucks need a backup point guard, and a little bit of youth. Cole Anthony bring the best of both of those, as a high usage 23 year old averaging 13/5/4 off the bench last year. Anthony can be a great on and off ball scorer for the Bucks off the bench, and can facilitate to a roster built around 3 and D wings. Bringing youth in would also help the oldest team in the NBA get a little bit younger around Giannis. Shedding Connaughton’s contract will also help with the luxury tax over time and having an extra 10 million next summer will also help the Bucks in free agency. The 5 million dollar trade exception is also a valuable asset.
The 2029 pick may be of concern, but keep in mind that’s only 6 years away. Giannis’ proven loyalty to the Bucks shows he isn’t leaving any time soon, and by 2029 the Bucks will likely still be a playoff team. Cole Anthony is only gonna get better, and even if the Bucks are bad, the protection on the pick will allow the pick to not convey for another year. While potentially this pick may end up in the lottery, I don’t see a reason why the Bucks wouldn’t sacrifice a pick for a win now and win later move as of this moment.
