Why They Do This
Orlando
Their biggest need is a playmaking PG who can space the floor. Simons is a hometown kid for Orlando, and he checks all those boxes. Him being on an expiring contract makes this a bit of a risk (hence involving OKC), but could be a perfect proof of concenpt opportunity if a core of Simons-Suggs-Franz-Paolo were to be successful.
Wendell Carter Jr. has been very solid in his Orlando tenure, but with how much Franz and Paolo rely on midrange/inside scoring, they need a Center who can provide them with elite pick & roll offense, and there currently aren't many better at that than Hartenstein.
Portland
With the growth of Sharpe this season, pairing him with proven All-star caliber guard who can settle the floor when needed may get the Blazers close to .500 on it's own. Tyler Herro provides them a longer term option to see how the team fills out with that type of composition without putting them in a salary bind when it comes time to extend Scoot/Sharpe.
Adding Isaac to their rotation also provides them with arguably the best defender (when healthy) on a super affordable long term deal. This also makes it possible to shop Ayton/Grant if the opportunity to move off of those contracts presents itself.
Orlando can also send a protected pick over to help match the value they get from Simons, while not overcommitting themselves. Gives Portland a needed affordable contract right when all their extensions are about to hit.
Miami
This team is at a crossroads. They could double down on the duo of Herro and Bam, or they could try and fill out their roster with affordable contracts, gain some immediate help via the draft, and retool. They don't figure to be competitive in the Eastern conference (let alone their own division) as constructed.
As far as the players they do receive, they get a very similar architype Center in WCJ on an insanely cheap contract.
They get veteran help from KCP
They get a bench spark from Cole
While Avdija could quickly prove to be the best player on Miami. He led a 36-46 Portland team in Win-Shares and has a super team-favorable contract.
This also gives Ware his opportunity to earn a starting job.
The obvious win here is three nearly immediate 1st rounders including getting their own back right away.
Special note: I don't like including 2nds because I don't believe anyone truly knows their value. Assume that Orlando AND OKC send over a couple 2nds each
OKC
This is a fairly straight-forward upgrade from Hartenstein to Bam. They give up two picks (one of which is just returning Miami's to them) and one additional contract filling player.
Losing Hartenstein isn't a small thing either, and I understand that. However, OKC has the opportunity to significantly upgrade their frontcourt and they don't really have the time to draft more prospects and develop them. Their coming up on a mess of contract extensions, and having some positions locked in with All-Star caliber players (Shai/Bam/maybe JDub/Chet) should be an urgent priority while they have all of these picks the next 2 years.
